Nvidia disables PhysX when ATI card is present with an Nvidia card for windows 7.

This is a frigging pain in the ass, I recently had the same problem using XP and the latest drivers, normally I have an ati card in my system running alongside my GTX260 for a multi-screen set-up and noticed that I couldn't enable PhysX on the nvidia card at all after updating my drivers, can't honestly believe they have done this, this means if I want PhysX and multi-screen I have to go out and purchase another nvidia card.

I am suprised so many people seem to be using both ati and nvidia cards on one system. I have had many driver issues with both cards and the thought of them being on the same system seems very off-putting.

Only time I've had issues is when moving over to an ATI card using crossfire from an nvidia card, never has any issues where crossfire has not been involved.

So if u can happily use an ati and an nv card in the same system, what's all this business about making sure u clean the other's drivers when u install a new card (switching between nv and ati)

Nail on the head - I'm not surprised by this move from NVidia, and there are two good reasons why I think this is the RIGHT move.

1. It is their product - why shouldn't they set boundaries on its compatibility? Can you imagine them having to buy all those different ATi cards to have to QA/Test the different configurations, and spend money themselves making sure there £50 physics gfx card works with a £200 ati one? The PhsyX dept must have a budget, it won't be huge - this is one of the limitations.

2. The list of uninstalls and reinstalls of device drivers when you change an ATi graphics card for nvidia (or vice versa) is huge, would you really want them in the same OS co-existing? It would be a mess, you would have so many issues it just wouldn't be worth the grief.

Like I said earlier there will probably be an unofficial 3rd party hack soon, NVidia just do not want to be held responsible for issues relating to ATI cards and drivers.

How could they be held responsible for a ATI issue ? and what issues ? from what I can tell all was well.

A third party hack is no use to developers, they are just being cocks as usual.

but the point is they have just killed PhysX
Why would a developer spend money on it (bar Nvidia incentives $$$, which wont be in most games) when it only is useful for half (at a completely arbitrary guess) the consumers can use it? It's just throwing money away so most companies simply won't bother

In a way i am glad they did it, hopefully OpenCL will become the standard and we will start to see great things in modern games as the platform matures :)

I can't believe that they'd need to test with different ATI cards. Surely they can run their tests on the PhysX DLL from a command line sans a rendered output?! Physics isn't connected to the rendering subsystem, it's just used as an output.

Every time a sound card company release new hardware they don't try every NV and ATI card they can get their hands on, they just test their own hardware!

Could we now return nvidia physics cards as they are no longer Fit For Purpose ?

I'm pritty sure in the UK we could.

Edit: Scurries away to find old Nvidia cards to send back for possible full refund.

Marketing scum. I hate any camp that takes these tactics. I am sure that the enfusiast community will bite back and will more than likely lead to a uturn eventually. So my next big upgrade being gfx i was thinking of popping a 8800 or like in there. now nvidea doesnt get any share of my gfx moneys because Im sure as hell not going to swop out my mobo etc.

I recon they have done this to try and discourage the move to ATI for Win7/DX11 with it looking like ATI will beet them to the punch. I'm sure it may just reapeara few months after.

For me it's the attitude in nvidia that is more worrying then this specific matter. They are showing they really don't want any competition they do not want to collaborate on anything they want the whole industry to do it nvidias way or they will screw things up. This is not really a matter of fanboyism this is something we as consumers should make clear to any company that we are not going to allow this and we won't be dictated too.

No company can carry on down this road without doing a lot of damage to themself so if your a fan of nvidia you need to oppose this so that they do not go the same way as 3dfx and many others have in the past when they got lazy and complacent.

I dont think they are getting lazy or complacent, they are clearly worried by the long term threat posed by ati and intel.
Those companies are in a much better position to limit Nvidia as (once larrabee matures) both will be able to offer complete cpu/gpu platforms. Nvidia is the odd one out at the moment and it will be very interesting to see how the battle between these giants unfolds.

they are just after some way of getting people to buy thier stuff, but thats kinda shot now. if you think about it cos those poeple who was going to buy a nVdia card to work as physics with thier radeons are not going to do that now. and most of the time user won't change from ATI back to Nvida just for physics and 1% gain in frame rates

so in my option I think they put themselfs in a worser situation than they was before.

without compatioion we will suffer becasue they can have thier prices set at what they like

Larrabee is no threat to nVidia... maybe in its original incarnation... tho even then I don't see intel giving it the driver support to make much impact...

nVidia has done far more harm to themselves with this move, they have pretty much ensured the demise of physx with their own closed minded greed.

Poor reason.

They could just refuse to support you if you run into issues, recommending you remove the ATI card or something. There is a big difference between that and actively disabling it.

Let the user decide.
