Nvidia Gameworks at Gamescom 2015

GameWorks - Lots of software technologies to make their games look better, help from NVidia engineers = reduced development time = less expenditure.

Mantle - No benefits to developers = increased development time, more technical support = more expenditure. Mantle only ever benefitted AMD and to a lesser extent AMD gamers.

Gameworks only benefits nVidia users. AMD users can't use physx and all over effects seem to cripple AMD performance. Even at best it makes game perform worse all round for all users. Most turn any effects off they can as they rather do without them! This says a lot lol.

No mate, GameWorks ran fine on my Fury X and PhysX effects worked well also in the games I played. The effects are good but yer, they are demanding but I would rather have them than not and if it is too demanding, you can switch them off, so no real loss to those on lower systems.

Mantle has evolved and now benefits everyone...

Actually it doesn't or didn't and was more of a good thing for AMD users but since the Fiji cards, Mantle as we know it is terrible and a 290 was getting as many frames as my Fury X on Mantle. On Nvidia, I couldn't use it full stop, so nothing good there at all.

Thank you. I said i would prefer it if they did a lot of this stuff themselves, for various reasons, but i do accept there are reasons as to why that's not always possible.

I think its time to move on :)

You say do it for themselves, but do you actually just mean use alternatives like bullett physics or whatever it is Blender uses or are you suggesting they write their physics engine from scratch to save using GameWorks?

Of course Mantle 1.0 is no used for new cards...but Vulkan is Mantle reincarnate...

It only cripples AMD performance because AMD GPU's have poor tessellation hardware. AMD could license PhysX for their much valued customers but they choose not to, similar to how they won't license HDMI 2.0 for their newly released premium products.

If you can turn GameWorks features off then why even cry about it? play your games as AMD want you to without any of them.

Erm, if a gameworks feature is turned off then it has no effect on performance. If a game is a gameworks game and it also performs poorly on AMD hardware, it isn't gameworks that is responsible.

Can I get Vulkan? I assume you are using it to know how good it is?

This is getting pedantic now. This is the same as saying give me a real game DX12 benchmark so I can test how good that is, about 6 months ago. I didn't see anyone saying this about DX12. In fact, When DX12 was announced, Nvidia guys were jizzing over how it will one up on Mantle, even though we all know it will be roughly the same.

Vulcan will be available in future games same as DX12. Unless you believe it won't for some reason.

Note that Valve's Source engine 2 will be using Vulkan and DX12.

DOta 2 on an integrated GPU will be a good demo.

If Mantle hadn't died, DX12 would have factually still had one up over Mantle. The whole "Being the standard" and that.

And Mantle's just shown us yet another weakness with new cards and old games.

Also, I'm skeptical Vulkan will gain any traction, because history.

i like how u lot kept quoting me without a response and kept banging the drum. gamework demos look great and dandy but in games all they add is a little bit of extra eye candy but at a big performance hit for either nvidia or amd with AMD taking the bigger performance hit because of their weaker tessellation! You guys replied as if i was a AMD fanboy lol. ive got to admit its quite funny reading the replys. I don't have a specific brand loyalty. I just wish gameworks just didn't take as much of a performance hit and didn't make the impression that when used in games it makes them run abysmal(mainly at launch/release).

With currently rocking a 290x i see the gameworks performance effect more than you guys do as your running nvidia hardware

I know greg said it ran okay on his furyx but tessellation is slightly better on the furyx than on previous AMD cards. Still worse than nvidia mind you! But i dont want to go start dipping under 60 FPS when using gameworks effects. And yes you can turn some gamework effects off if the developer enables this feature. Wasn't present in witcher 3 until a big fuss was made. But usually the games still seem to run worse on amd hardware due to gameworks as the game is more optimised for nvidia due to the licensing.

Yea i know AMD could pull their finger out and do something about it but the point i was making was 1 its not optimised very well as people are making out. And two it hurts AMD users and mantle never hurt anyone. FYI i didn't bring mantle into the discussion some other guys did.

and three im looking at upgrading to a 980Ti currently before u start giving flak. Or possibly waiting to see what pascal brings to the table not sure yet. Quite excited to see pascal! I say quite i mean REALLY :D

Quite an assumption that because people aren't hating on GameWorks that they're running Nvidia cards...

Also, Mantle didn't hurt Nvidia because Nvidia COULDN'T run Mantle. If you don't run GameWorks I don't see how that's hurting anyone either?

The complaint here seems to be that unlike AMD with Mantle, Nvidia allow GameWorks to run on competitors hardware. If Nvidia just didn't allow any of the effects to run on AMD hardware would that stop the complaints because then it's the same as Mantle? Or would we then get the same people complaining that Nvidia had locked AMD out of using the effects (like AMD did with TressFX in Lichdom)?
