I dont think you can just look at the raw number and say its not enough. This is HBM a complete new tech. Also an AMD guy said something about memory not being used correctly right now leading to higher than necessary memory consumption. I dont think AMD would settle for 4gb HBM on their flagship if it were not going to be enough for 4k. There must be some voodoo being done that we dont know anything about yet. Anything else would be crazy :) Perhaps some aggressive compression? Better memory management overall at driver level. Who knows.
I think you're right... there has to be something more to HBM... at least I very much hope so, otherwise if these cards don't stack up against the 980Ti/Titan X, especially with Nvidia getting the jump on AMD again by releasing next week... then it surely won't be long before the GPU sector bids farewell to AMD for good. If the 3xx doesn't compete, it will bury them, once and for all. Not that I think this will happen, I'm just sure there's more to HBM than we currently know, and it certainly isn't as simple as saying 6GB trumps 4GB.

Going to be a sad future for graphics cards if the high end and flagship products are way above £500.

I expected the 980 to drop in price and the 980ti to come in around £500-600.

Unfortunately, like most companies, they need a reason to do that. If there's next to no competition and people are still buying, they have no reason to drop the prices.

Hopefully they'll drop slightly when AMD release the 390X and their flagship HBM card.

Yer I did. I was very confident that the 980/70 would drop in price and the 980Ti would slot into the 980 bracket..... A shame that didn't/isn't happening and a real shame but from a business point, there is no competition, so charge accordingly.

I've been saying from £650 for weeks. Just sayin.

With the usual UK shafting conversions, I reckon it's going to be more like £685?

It's getting silly. The 780TI was about £550 on release wasn't it? It should be no more than that.

Pondering SLI 980 > Ti or TX.

Unless you're having specific SLI issues, I'm really starting to think why would you???

I'm rethinking the situation now. I was fully expecting to switch from my 780Tis in SLI to a single 980TI, but not so sure now at all.

The big recent releases run fine (gta5 and witcher 3, once a decent driver is out even more so).

And the witcher 3 uses about 1.8gb VRAM max at 1440p. Don't feel a need now at all to 'upgrade'. I don't have a single game that is struggling with 3Gb VRAM. Baaaa I want to ***** some needless cash and need some justification :-)

It's GTA5 that I can't run at max. Advanced settings have to be off and I have to drop AA. What will the next batch of games be like, it's the 4GB VRAM that's limiting me at 3440x1440.

GTA5 is a game like no other in my opinion. It actually looks to be well designed to use whatever you ask it to.
Mine is using just over 5Gb on my titan x with most of the settings turned up to max. I could get it higher if I upped the AA etc
