**Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti Review Thread**

From the clock speed I take it that's the EVGA Superclocked?

Nope its the Asus Reference.

A few reviews have stated that the card is hot and loud but then a few state it runs pretty cool and quiet...

yeah ive reviews saying 59 degrees under load.. now i knew that was horses**t the second i read it.. but didnt expect it to be this hot.

a quick outdated benchmark of 3dmark11 with a score of P17410 (i only have the demo)

Gonna run it through the latest 3dmark demo while i eat as it takes a long time when you dont own it.

No doubt the people who took great joy in poking fun at the reference 290(x) owners because their cards ran hot and loud (iirc saying things along the lines of "hotter than the sun, who would want a GPU, which runs that hot and loud especially in summer" etc.) will change their tune now.... :D In fact, I'm tempted to go searching for some of those posts :p

A lot of the textures are extremely poor looking so I think that helps unlike SOM where every texture looks good/HD.
Tbh, both camps have had hot running cards. Gtx 400 series being one of note. As mentioned, probably the cooker used has had its day. Aftermarket ones should be a lot better as with 290 series.

Not the reference ones, the custom ones you will have to do some research.

Hi, sorry if this is stupid, but as a GPU neophyte - is there any problem with a missing back plate? Ie, should I be looking to buy something to fill the gap, or are they ok like that? Are they renowned dust traps or anything?

I always head first to the Techpowerup review. Tend not to get any mince out of there....

They say that within 1 minute of gaming on the reference card, the GPU heats up to 84C°, which is the temp at which throttling begins.

Not good signs at all.

Water Or Hybrid cooling on these things or go home.

I have a HD 7970 sitting in my machine since 3.5 years, that doesn't have a back plate and has fine layer of dust over it.....still working.

...obviously I would prefer it if there was a back plate but not sure how essential it is.

Well i can say right now the reference cooler doesnt seem to do a very good job at cooling this bad boy.

EDIT: And its pretty noisy to.. this is after 5 minutes of witcher 3 with everything maxed at 3440x1440 including hairworks.. was out in the wilderness where i got roughly 45 fps.

Have you tested the temps under the same load with the fan at 100%?

Probably won't shave to much off of the temps, but would be interesting to see the nonetheless

87 degrees at 63% fan speed, that's terrible i'm afraid. :(
Did anyone buy the non reference design ones?

That's so odd as OC3D's OC'd card topped out around at 84-87 and with boost it was at 1410+Mhz on the core to reach those temps.

Then again chassis design, air intake, and ambient temps all have a part to play as well.

Its quite possible other variables would come into play here,

Room temperature
air flow in the case
fan speed

But even so its still pretty high.. glad i pre ordered the evga hybrid!

The guy who bought it lives in Denmark, well so he said and it's always cold up there.
But agreed, all those factors do play a part but if someone has a 980ti then I expect the rest of his setup to be well thought out.

Well I still ordered two EVGA Superclocked on and it's always cool in Ireland. Should be grand in my H440 chassis. I see no point in overclocking them :)

Knew it, glad I waited, will grab myself a hybrid, thanks for testing it.

I am going this route also......600 GBP delivered!

Could have gotten one today before they sold out but I don't like to make large purchases in too much haste.....perhaps AMD will get information out about their upcoming line up that will make me change my mind between now and whenever the EVGA Hybrids become available again.

600?! I assume you are looking at a 3rd party? mine totalled £661.39 from OC!
