Was the same thing when titan x launched and many noticed it was louder, yet oddly enough it was barely ever mentioned in the titan x thread. Funny how that works ;)

haha indeed :D

A bit like the 480/470 as well...

same thing for power consumption too, remember the "need a nuclear power plant to power that thing" comments? ;)

Tbh, both camps have had hot running cards. Gtx 400 series being one of note. As mentioned, probably the cooker used has had its day. Aftermarket ones should be a lot better as with 290 series.

Yup, both sides have had some hot and loud cards when the other side has been cooler and quieter.

Personally I would prefer a cooler and quieter card but bang per buck is always the number one priority for me and if that is superb then I can make do with having a tiny sun in my pc :D

600?! I assume you are looking at a 3rd party? mine totalled £661.39 from OC!

To be fair, I am relying on having a German/Euro denominated bank account to get that price. Otherwise the banks would add 20 GBP on it as money changing fees (which is one of the reasons I have a Euro denominated bank account......but does this little bonus compensate for the hit I have taken due to the Euro tanking in recent months....hell no!)

Had 470 sli here, very hot despite being reference models in a very well ventilated case. Ideally id prefer a reference cooled card this time as I made the mistake of sticking x2 windforce 780's in my current setup. I usually end up running sli later down the line.

Are there any techies who could advise if the TX has some superior electronics? I remember during launch they said it was sporting some super quiet caps etc. Has this carried onto the 980ti?

The noise levels on the ref cards under OC load are near that of a 290x :( Hopefully the asus Strix / rog can negate that. Even then.. why 3 fans.. this chip must be fond of the heat.

That's so odd as OC3D's OC'd card topped out around at 84-87 and with boost it was at 1410+Mhz on the core to reach those temps.

Then again chassis design, air intake, and ambient temps all have a part to play as well.
Its all housed in a Corsair carbide 540 air with maximum airflow through 3 courgar vortex 120s in the front and SP140 in the top and back. Should be noted that its sunny here and a bit warmer than it normally is.

That is really low graphics score....

is the card throttling?

Edit

Here is a comparison with my OC'ed 980

Ran firestrike again with 80% fan speed. Got 14357 score

Heres the gpuz after the run(was reset before run). I think its safe to say the card is throttling when the fan is on auto.. Great job nvidia. cant even the darn fan curve right.

The TX also throttles when left to the default NVidia fan profile and a 1:1 fan is quite noisy but never see's the TX throttle, so a trade off. When I am just gaming, I allow the card to throttle to keep the noise down and I can't ever say I have noticed that in games.

For reference, here is my 3DMark Firestrike score
