4080 12GB: 7680 46.9%

Based purely on CUDA core counts (compared to the same series xx90 card), and ignoring memory bandwidth / etc, the 4080 16GB is in line with a xx70 series card, and the 4080 12GB is in line with a xx60 Ti card.
Just to add to this, an 80 class card usually has at least 70+ % of the top cards cuda cores, the only card in the last 10 years to fall under 70% was the 2080 which was widely regarded as a poor card and no 80 class card has ever had under 60% which is where the 70 class cards land with the exception of the 1070ti which had over 60%.

CUDA count is one factpr, however what matters is overall performance and if the performance is in line with consumer and industry expectations for a generational jump then the naming and positioning would be acceptable. If it isn't then the market will judge it accordingly. It's clear than the RTX3080 was a bit of a freak card and from Nvidia's side it was a mistake to position is so closely to the RTX3090 as to make the RTX3090 largely redundant and outlandishly priced for the limited additional performance. Clearly they are not making the same mistake again and the 4080 is being more limited to make the gulf between it and the RTX4090 larger.

Lets wait for the benchmarks before making definitive conclusions about what naming is or isn't deserved because so far the only thing the industry and community agrees on is that the 4080 12GB was horribly misnamed.

It's fine if they want to make the performance gap wider for an 80 non ti although I'd still argue that the 40% deficit is too big a gap this time but why almost double the price? What this does though it stack it up against the 3080ti from last gen which had an msrp of $1119 so you'd expect similar gains for the 4080 16gb over a 3080ti than the 4090 had over a 3090.

The 4090 was around 75% faster than a 3090 for $100 more so I think the 4080 16gb needs to be atleast 65% faster than a 3080ti given its $80 higher msrp. The 4080 12gb when it gets reincarnated would need to have similar gains to whatever it's priced up against +$100.

@Gibbo Hi
I have made a Pre order on the first day launching the 4090
The order was ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 OC Edition Graphics Card and paid in full by credit card
The transaction was successful and the order status was ORDERED.
Suddenly yesterday the order status changed to UNDEFINED ....????
What does this mean ? knowing that i had a confirmation e-mail and i didn`t mind waiting.

Anyone who has a status saying undefined I’m not sure what it means.

Please contact customer service either via section on forum or by calling sales.

Did you use Amazon Pay?

Given the $1200 4080 16gb scored 55fps in A plagues tale compared to 106fps on a $1600 4090 I doubt they will be flying off the shelves regardless of stock once the reviews are out.
So not really that much faster than a 3090 then?? Given the price of the 3090's right now it would be silly not to pick one up for cheap if you can.

The difference between the 4090 and 4080 is quite big in terms of core count.

What is the deal with the stock situation for 4090 ? Do we have a repeat of the 3000 series again ? I can't buy it anywhere...
Feels like it it might be... If it takes too long to get supply again I'm simply not going to upgrade this round and keep on chugging with old hardware. I'm certainly not interested in dropping 4 figure sums of money on something about to be superseded in performance by mid gen refresh or made obsolete by next gen. I wonder what the knock on effect of all this is on e.g. ocuk as I certainly won't look at big upgrades for the rest of my pc components without the GPU! Surely others doing the same. Also, obligatory comment on scalpers being absolute leeches on society.

NVIDIA wants you to buy 3k series instead. And then they might bring more 4k to the market. Till that happens, expect it to trickle down slowly, just to not drop pricing or push people away from 3k ones. Or so it looks to be the case (plus all that Jensen said about market manipulation and making sure channels will be able to sell 3k series first before 4k really starts selling).

Who bought the hideous strix (both in looks & price) ?
Should come with a free can of black spray paint at least :)
