Genuinely suspect nvidia gave this impression to put off scalpers. Im guessing stock will trickle in very slowly over time and the 4080 whatever could be a paper launch until 3k series clears up. Nvidia will mention global recession/market conditions when explaining why 4080 stock is low to their shareholders.

Wouldn't be ironic if nvidia released a new crypto based coin to support gpu sales. Coins/tokens could be exchanged for nvidia cards
Given the $1200 4080 16gb scored 55fps in A plagues tale compared to 106fps on a $1600 4090 I doubt they will be flying off the shelves regardless of stock once the reviews are out.

Yup it's around 60% of the chip the 4090 cores so scaling well it seems (unlike Ampere). Needs to be $900 imo then they'll sell.

lol same! I got an email at 12:23 and checked at 12:24, all I see now is notify me... :(
Same same. Bots might've scanned it earlier and nabbed it before email even arrived in our mailboxes, as usual. Till scalpers' prices drop really low to around MSRP, they will still try to earn money, even if it's just few %.

I wouldn't even pay $900 for it, 60% performance of the top chip is usually reserved for a 70 class card and the 4090 isn't even the top chip.
Well, technically that 4080 16GB IS a xx70 class chip (and 12GB is xx60 one). Not that NVIDIA care. I suspect they plan to release 4080 Super and 4080 Ti later too, hence they needed plenty of space to push it in between existing products easier.

What? The reported performance and specs of the 4080 16GB and 4070 12GB are imo in line with xx80 and xx80 class cards.
Uff, I don't want to copy and paste already widely known information, but internet is full of exact reasons why they are technically xx70 and xx60 class chips respectively (naming, memory bus, size, performance, etc. etc.). Most big youtubers and reviewers seem to be in agreement. And that is also the reason why NVIDIA un-launched 4080 12GB, as they just couldn't fool people that much anymore with both price and name of it. Hopefully they will do the same with 4080 16GB and name them properly, lowering prices too. I doubt it, though.

Only the 4080 12GB was wrongly/misleadingly named and that is common knowledge, hency why Nvidis backtracked after the backlash. The performance of the 4080 16GB seems in line with an xx80 part from the initial benchmark results when you compare to the 3080. https://videocardz.com/newz/alleged-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4080-16gb-3dmark-benchmarks-have-been-leaked

Otherwise, please show me some compelling evidence that the 4080 16GB and soon-to-be 4070 12GB are actually performing like xx70 and xx60 parts.

Code:
CUDA core count comparison
3090: 10496 100%
3080: 8704 82.9%
3070: 5888 56.1%
3060 Ti: 4864 46.3%
3060: 3584 34.1%

4090: 16384 100%
4080 16GB: 9728 59.4%
4080 12GB: 7680 46.9%

Based purely on CUDA core counts (compared to the same series xx90 card), and ignoring memory bandwidth / etc, the 4080 16GB is in line with a xx70 series card, and the 4080 12GB is in line with a xx60 Ti card.

This, plus naming of the chip itself. But i reckon Nvidia decided that 3080Ti was a tight squeeze between 3080 and 3090 so this time they wanted to have much more space and suck dry early adopters and then spit in their faces with better chips released later for the same price (Ti/Super). Hence, 4090 is the only one I even consider buying (if it's ever back in stock).
