NVIDIA GTX 970 OWNERS THREAD

My stock 3.9GHz 3770K seems to handle SLI GTX970s well enough. I see both cards hitting 98-99% usage. I might overclock my CPU a bit, currently it hits low 60°s at most. So a bit of room for overclocking I guess.

Cooper can you post some benchmarks and stuff?

I may toy with SLI later on but from experience anything less than a 4770k seemed to handicap two cards due to the lower number of threads.

Do you think an i5 is a bit lightweight for SLI 970's? I've seen my GPU's sit at around 60% load in Skyrim (heavilly modded) and Far Cry 4 and I was starting to wonder if the 4670k was struggling a little bit, but the CPU sits at around 50% load so I wasn't sure.

I also struggle to get the core clock above 1500 and the mem clock causes crashes if I push any where north of +250

You've probably landed with Hynix ram which overclocks a lot less than the samsung unfortunately!

Has anyone here recently got a g1 with samsung ram at all?

When I had 670s and an i5 I noticed that the GPUs would run around 60-80% when gaming. When I switched to an i7 that rose to 99% on each GPU so since then i've been wary of going dual GPU unless I have a decent CPU.

My 4690k is happily running at 4.7GHz and handles a single 970 perfectly fine at 2560x1080 however I keep getting the itch but previous experience keeps telling me don't me stupid.

Would be interesting to see what results people get. I mostly play BF4, COH2, Arma 3, World of Tanks, War Thunder and will dabble in H1Z1 when it comes out

Thats the situation i found myself in with sli 670's, (3570k). Moving to a 3770k sorted it out. Hence i always go with an i7 as its useful to have the extra threads as i inevitably end up going multi gpu.

Trouble is I can't afford a 4790k plus a 2nd 970 :p

Plus my 4690k is a decent chip so would be reluctant to get rid.

I'll probably just leave this setup for as long as possible before moving completely to X99 in the future when it drops in price ha

All @ stock speeds (never been one for overclocking GPU's)

yeah im waiting for next stuff and DDR4 mem before upgrading cpu.i5s are fine aslong as you single card.actually for some unknown reason actually faster than i7s in some instances which i dont know the reason for but seen it in many bf benchmarks.

Just ordered one of the OcUK 970's with the reference coolers. Are they decent overclockers?

I recommended one of these for my brother, and it's an excellent card. Got it to boost around 1550 MHz stable, but clocked it down so it boosts now at around 1500.

Only got to play with it for a while, but yes, great overclocker, and quiet as well, with superb build quality.

Perfect thank you Cooper

Judging by other results (2x970 and a 4770k/4790k) your result is down about 4,000 points. What that equates to gaming I don't know but it's interesting all the same so thank you

The other benefit i'd have with two cards is my mining output but still that's nothing really to sing about. I should be able to sell my 8320 and ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z soon so I may have some extra cash to splash towards a 2nd card, perhaps just for future proofing.

I don't plan on going 4K any time soon and with 1440 probably my next step, I believe two 970s would happily dominate this resolution with room to spare.

Hmm I have GTX 970 SLI with a 4690K (at stock speeds atm as I just built it) and looking at afterburner both cards are hitting 100% usage under heavy load.
This would seem to indicate they are not getting bottlenecked right or am I missing something? Whats the best way to determine if there's a bottleneck?

What resolution and what game?

It may be that stuff has just matured over the years since my 670s and that in actual fact the 4690k does cope with two cards.
