NVIDIA Preparing GK180 Based Tesla K40 “ATLAS’ GPU With Over 4 Teraflops Compute Performance

I said fair minimum, I was being nice lol :D.

You find people on here are happy to claim otherwise with lower resolutions and current gen cards in the 2GB debate, but then they subtly mention they've removed some AA and a few settings lol... I've never had that make do attitude, it's a curse :(

Yes it is a curse, I will never run a game at reduced settings, it makes a joke of running at a higher resolution.

Another game that will cripple the 290X @4K is RTW2 and then there is a modded Skyrim to consider.:D

I am a little annoyed with AMD claiming that the 290X is suitable for 4K after having to see AMD implying that you need 3GB for BF4 at much lower resolutions. AMD can not have it both ways.:D

I don't have a problem with the R9 290X as I have some on order, but it is very much horses for courses.

How can people be saying 4GB+ would be required for 4k...?

People with triple 2560x1440 displays have been using resolutions with 50% more pixels then 4k. They have even said they have been fine with 2GB cards. Yes BF4 will need larger than 2GB but it will not need 4GB.

It will need more than 4gb if you want to max games out.

If you want to run games on reduced settings what is the point of a 4K monitor, you may as well stick with 1600p.

It's a fair argument when you'll be paying through the nose for one. Maybe (and this is just speculating) 6GB GDDR5 would have tipped the balance putting the 290 in at a higher price point.

It will be 8GB not 6

You are ridiculously wrong every time.

I believe that AA is not needed in 4K, as many think that it's already less necessary in 1440p. Then 4GB will be enough for new multiplatform games.

Anyway it is STUPID to discuss amounts of memory on those cards. As manufacturer can always double it. Nothing is easier. What is important is how powerful those cards are.

If you are not going to use AA why don't you stick with 1600p and use it and save yourself a load of money in the process.

8gb is the way to go on these cards rather than trying to defend the indefensible. If I hook up a 4K monitor to 4 R9 290Xs I would like them to run.

I've seen 4k myself and while it might be game and person dependent, imo AA is still needed to eradicate jaggies. If you play without AA then there's little point in spending £500+ on a card/cards anyway unless you're going for 120/144fps for your 120/144hz monitor.

It's not stupid when people will be buying into the reference cards having seen AMD market them quite openly, only to find you do need more VRAM. :)

Anyway it's an unknown...it's definitely not stupid though so don't get too irate.

Sorry dude I meant as an original design choice rather than any future ones.

It's a disgrace when people write BS that they have no idea about. Not 1 fact to substantiate their lies.

BF4 most memory demanding production game to date.
2 megapixels memory use 2300MB
4 megapixels memory use 2700MB (+15%)
8 megapixels memory use~3100MB (+15%) that is what 4k requires WITH AA

Just look at difference between 2megapixels(fullhd) and 4 megapixels(2560x1600) and you'll see what 4k (8 megapixels) requires! Double pixels +15% memory.
And without AA it's just 10% memory increase.

sand_dune there's quite a few graphics settings in the BF4 beta missing, the full game will be even more demanding on "real full ultra settings"

LOL. So that principle is a definite? In one game I might add...

The card isn't even out yet. Let's assume you'd want to keep them for 8 months to a year. Are you saying there won't be games that use an additional 900MB in that time?

It's cutting it fine, in the same way the 580GTX did with it's 1.5GB VRAM. You just can't know for sure till they iron everything out. Time will tell.

OK, you can have AA with a few % more memory use np, as I showed.

First of all lets be honest practically no one is going to game in 4k any time soon.

Secondly those people who will, currently have no game that will run out of 4GB in that resolution, according to diagramm. Also they have 0.9GB in reserve. And according to how BF4 runs on 2Gb cards, reserve is probably double of 0.9GB

Thirdly if people can afford say 2 top graphic cards and a 4k monitor they will not be deterred by a thought that sometime in future(at the time when 1-2 new generations of cards appear) these people will have to upgrade their setup.

You are so wrong

Crysis 3 uses 3.5gb of vram @1600p @5760x1080 over 4gb and I hate to think what it uses @4K

Skyrim modded uses huge amounts of vram

RTW2 maxed won't even run @4K using 4gb, it uses over 3gb at 1600p.

@sand_dune what is your angle on this, do you work for AMD, you use their hardware or what. I have seen you trying to defend the indefensible a number of times on these forums where the other AMD guys are more even handed.

My angle on this is I am going to buy the R9 290X as it is a brilliant card but it does have limits.

That is another way to write a stupid unsubstantiated statement! Go check and tell us whether it is or it isn't, google is all yours! Or do you expect me to do all the job and return and say YES IT IS DEFINITE?
