NVIDIA RTX 3080Ti to launch in January 2021?

I don't think it's understandable at all, lol. I have spent the same year indoors and I don't feel even the slightest bit inclined to spend over £1000 on a card.
Then you aren't capable of anything more than basic levels of empathy. It's ok, everyone is wired differently. :)

How can I feel empathy for what is hysteria? I mean, sure, people get bored, they need to buy something to keep themselves occupied, I get that, but to spend on something that is four times RRP? That's not reasonable. It's an illness!

The 6800xt has a better Eth has rate than anything besides the 3090, 3080 and Radeon 7. If you think this is somehow "much slower" then you're delusional, miners use other cards besides the 3080, believe it or not. Not only that, but as the TDP of the 6800xt is much lower than the 3080.

Point being miners are using and benefiting significantly from cards like the 6800xt.

6-series hash rate is on par with its RT performance.

Ie no point switching the damn thing on.

Sure, lets just agree to disagree. :)

I guess I'm in the middle on this, I can understand why some people with high disposable income would pay over the odds for something they want, and for once GPUs are not a depreciating asset, so arguably the actual cost isn't that high if you sell again at a high price. But equally if you weigh it up purely on gaming performance benefit, it's a bit bonkers and I'm not totally sold on this 'lockdown' excuse, for most serious gamers that would spend a 4-digit sum on a graphics card they were probably well into sitting in front of a computer for hours anyway. Maybe I lost touch with reality somewhere along the the way and am still living in a bygone era but I've always felt that anything over £500 was the sole domain of the elite, the hardcore enthusiasts or those with bucketloads of cash burning a hole in their pockets. Your typical PC Gamer I never thought would be spamming F5 to buy cards for hundreds above what are already extremely high MSRP - yes I would expect to see them doing that for special promotions, limited run of RTX 3080 discounted to £499 or whatever, but not this.

Times have changed and £500 is entry level now apparently going by recent prices.

It's never been this hard to grab a gpu, even with past mining spikes it's never been this bad. :(

I guess more people are mining this time around.

Yeah it gets worse every time I look.

I had a look the other day and not one card it stock on any computer website.

Couldn't believe prices of second hand cards just getting higher and higher, I had a look yesterday and the old 280x going for £130+ and I have one just sat in my bedroom drawer thinking it's worthless.

Well, just my tuppence on the hysteria of buying overpriced cards etc...

So, given this pricing madness atm I'm in a sticky position tbh. I have a custom desktop I built 5 years ago and it's ailing nm barely holding up now at 1080p in more demanding/less well optimised games.
I can understand why a lot of folks shut up in their homes but still good for plenty of disposable might be ok with 2-3x prices (aside from the idea that paying such odds only encourages scalpers but, eh) I wouldn't be so ok myself but for longterm and chronic illness. When Covid started I was told I was very vulnerable and, honest to the gods, didn't leave the house but for really important hospital stuff, from March to March... so I get the idea of folks going a bit stir crazy, it happened to me and tbh I spent a lot of time even before Covid too crook to go out much anyway. On the other hand, personally those prices are... well, nuts and beyond me. Normally they would be, that is... but I've stooped I'm looking at prebuilds rn despite no single vendor stocking all the parts I'd choose (cos around £1200 for, say, a 3080 as part of a fuller build is a lot better than the only ones I've seen outside of prebuild sites at twice that/the price of a full build) and I'm justifying it with the idea that for a long time starting about 2 months after I built my desktop I had a major flare up/decline of my condition, among other troubles, and literally could not play a thing for a couple or so years. After that I still couldn't get the desktop back and make it good again due to low funds aso. By now, too late... its a 6700K/1070 deal, so not up to a lot anymore tbh. It's no fun considering both that my original plan was for 1440UW (not doable with any longevity with the tech at the time) and that I have saved up money for an upgrade for long enough. Being ill for a long time I went without much that most might take for granted for almost as long and... well, hell with that again.
So yeah, I get why folks would pay over the odds now aso. In a way, I've been isolating even longer than Covid and it gets you hungry to beat the ennui I guess. it's been an awful year overall, for most of us one way or another. For me, maybe a bit different but I need a full build quick and why not? I've saved for literally years just like I did for the last one, built in 2016 saved from 2010. Gaming is one of very few pleasures I've left tbh, outside of my gf or the cat, and I missed out on a lot of good gaming for long enough.

Btw, funny enough I actually got Covid, despite my year of precautions, only last month. I've been ill for years but that. Was. Bloody. Awful. And I probably have the long version now too, hey ho.
If there's still a chance of it don't take any chances, folks. Stay safe, be well please.

Jay on a bit of a rant.

Why is he having a go at Nvidia? They are making a product none of us could possibly make and would get great usage out of it, in theory. The problem are miners and scalpers, they are the people who are ****ing up pc gaming for years, possibly decades to come. Until governments intervene, the chip shortage will be a problem for years. Scary stuff.

The 3080ti will be an awesome card that I would have been in for pre-pandemic (subject to reviews) but of course it will be a unicorn for at least a year.

Well at least Nvidia are nerfing them for the miners, so it’ll just be the scalpers to contend with.

Might just stand a chance of getting one, but god only knows what the RRP will be once in stock. Same as the 3090FE probably.
