NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - (PRE)ORDER DISCUSSION **NO COMPETITOR HINTING**

There's a difference accepting a ludicrous offer and actively seeking one

This doesn't actually make much sense, if he actually wanted to flip it he would undercut the market and try selling at like £3200. As far as I can tell he's trying to sell significantly above what the scalped market is doing (fe models for example are going for about 4k).

Hmm mixed feelings! It’s undeniable that intending to buy something in low supply and then attempting to sell it for a higher price is undoubtedly seeking to exploit a situation.

Is that bad? Well, no. It can be logical and it’s a pillar of sound financial practice. Am I surprised that people are annoyed? Also no. Many people are sitting on ye olde cards, so it’s an exciting purchase… it ‘hurts’ to see anything that is slowing down a process.

When annoyed, it’s your own job to manage that annoyance… but the seller also needs to ride the wave of being potentially seen as a pest.

Then as a minor point, solely intending to buy to resell doesn’t seem like what he’s done. But I expect he’s not someone that’s upgrading from a ‘ye olde’ card… can’t remember :p

Personally, the only annoying thing for me is desperately wanting some forum reviews / temps - get on with it @Hostile_18 I’m chomping here :p

This post was brought to you by typing with one thumb :o

Well you tried to do it on the sly but got caught out...

Hope you're not a big believer in karma ha

@Personality+ will back me up that this isnt the case. We had a discussion earlier where I said I don't mind having the discussion if it gets brought up, as my location was the same as here. Also if you check out my first reply to it, it was clearly sarcasm. Believe in karma for what? Potentially selling something that I really wanted but has turned out to be really valuable? If that your definition of deserving bad karma?

People are so quick to label buying a 1500+ gpu crazy and excessive and a waste of money, but also so quick to turn their faces up at people who do value money when an asset they have is worth much more than they paid for it. Is playing Cyberpunk at max settings really worth £5k+ to me as an end user? At what point is it financially irresponsible to not consider selling?

The word you are looking for is greed.

The formula is purchase price x2. I'm not seeing any difference.

Dude it's your choice on what you do with it but don't come here looking to justify scalping, you ain't going to win across many on here.

To be honest I think if you present the facts honestly like I have most us would face a dilemma between choosing between getting a graphics card early or getting over two times your money back. You said I'd been "caught out" I was just clarifying that wasn't the case since I had the receipts to prove it.

I think Nvidia are more to blame, then retails scalping, then bots, then the every day end user faced with this choice.

Funnily enough, there's been three times I've sold a GPU for more than I bought it for:

1) RX 5700XT: Bought on release for £400 in autumn 2019 (reference blower style :(). Sold during crypto mania in 2021 for £750. Nearly sold it for £300 in summer 2020, but changed my mind (thank god...)

2) 4070Ti: Bought from the jungle Nov 2023, mispriced at £575. Sold it six weeks later for £675 (which was the average used price at the time). This was a tough one, I actually wanted a 4090 but couldn't resist the misprice. Using the 4070 Ti just made me want the 4090 even more. Also, the Super cards were releasing in a few weeks and I was worried the 4070 Ti would crash (shouldn't have worried, considering how crap the super cards turned out to be).

3) 4090 FE: Bought a year ago for £1579 MSRP. Just sold for £1,900, getting ready for the 5090. After £135 (!) shipping cost, I did make a profit, so not bad.

The point I'm making, is that it's perfectly possible to inadvertently make a profit on a GPU without being a scalping scumbag :D

Would I sell the 5090 Suprim for £6K or £4.4K or whatever? Probably not, tbh. I get quite excited about tech and I'd want to use it asap...

Most cards are listed below x2 price
So they are selling for 4k and they also aren't. Gotcha.

There also isn't a threshold where scalping isn't scalping. People can scalp all they want. Just don't bring it here. Anyone who is buying a £3k card, another £3k will have no bearing on their life. We are gamers, we are excited about the tech and getting it in our rigs. We are not excited to hear how much profit someone is trying to make from it.

Good points. I think the last point all comes down to how much money you have. To some people double your money back on a £2700 card isnt worth mising the excitement, where's to some without much it can make a significant difference.

@Nitefly is right in that for me its super high listing like I have done or keep it and enjoy it (because that REALLY appeals to me as well). I always go into these things knowing I'll eventually sell.. its just usually at the end of generation, not the beginning lol. The harsh reality is there is likely less than 100 units in the country of the Suprim, which is just crazy to think about.

Well done for not being able to read, the key word here is 'most'. I hope I don't have to explain what the word most means to you right?

Please try again.

If you could do mean, median and modal values of the fe "going for" price and compare that to the launch price of £1939, then extrapolate to explain how one of our own actively encouraging the process is good for the community, then that would probably clear it up for me.
