Position 220 down from 252 for the Zotac solid. However I’d be lying if I said all this talk of melting connectors didn’t get me a little bit worried.

Is this something concerning enough to hold off from or just a rare occurrence?

If the card arrives before the specifics of the issues have been clarified (beyond ‘well, this was clearly a terrible / short sighted design’), just use whatever ugly adaptor cable comes with the GPU issued by Zotac.

That way, Zotac shouldn’t be able to pass off RMA issues on the basis you’ve used it incorrectly / used an incompatible cable.

That’s the approach I’ll be taking myself. Hopefully it won’t go wrong, but it does require accepting a little bit of risk - I won’t be pushing the GPU unless I’m in the room to spot something is going wrong, so it won’t be left unattended.

If you don’t want the stress of it potentially having issues, then for peace of mind you might be better off cancelling - but you’ve got some time in the queue yet to make a decision! The next few weeks will hopefully make the situation clearer and you can decide then

That was the 5080 though right? That said the connector on that already looked better than the one on the fe board lol.

I mean I don't think they can deny you for using the cable that came with your psu either. Assuming your psu is good quality.

You’d hope so - I agree. Using the adaptor they give you is just ‘redundancy control’, to be extra safe and to avoid any stress of them interrogating you during the RMA process. You don’t want them saying “you’ll have to take this up with you PSU provider” - which I would hope is unlikely but it would be particularly frustrating!

Mine came with 2 1 to 1, 2 1 to 2 and the new connector cable which is 2 to 4 in terms of psu to gpu end. I think this is because corsair rates it's psu end connectors at 300w out. So I think I'd just keep using the cable which was designated for it.

As I mentioned elsewhere, if they went with two H++ connectors on the GPU side there wouldn’t have been a problem… but as was pointed out this wouldn’t resolve an aim of having one connector to cut costs. I went with that PSU with 2 native cables at the time assuming this may be their solution to the melting singular stressed cable. But apparently not. Silly design, really.

So are we also saying that a 600w third party cable with up to x4 pcie connectors will help in this situation? Will it balance the load and help if there is a failure on a single cable? I only have the x2 pcie version (ASUS cablemod, with an older spec ATX 2.0 PSU.)

I largely think it should have been scrapped and rethought when we had the debacle with the 4090s. I don't think user error really was a good defense when the result was a potential dangerous fire hazard that could do more harm than just taking out pc parts.

Agreed - there should be enough ‘redundancy’ in the design to account for connection issues. It should either be secure and work perfectly, or stop working entirely if anything is going wrong.

@harmattan I agree that there overall isn’t huge difference between different AIB cards, but it’s worth remembering that a difference in 10db is supposed to be akin to ‘half the volume’ in respect of perceived loudness.

So the difference in fan noise is potentially quite a bit between those models. This is the most important aspect for me personally, more so than ‘mere temps’.

From my perspective, if you're worried about a 10db difference, you could astoundingly almost buy a set of Focal Bathys (which you could use for a lot more than PC gaming) for the difference and be done with it. Astral and marginally lower temps, or Palit and a set of Focal Bathys...? Easy choice for me.

Yeah that’s the silly thing with the Astrals… the 4th fan makes it comically noisy - apparently they may issue a new bios update to calm it down, or at least this is what the tech-tubers are recommending (derbaur said this in his review, for example).

I think many people take temps and sound (volume / profile / uniformity) into account when considering GPUs, or at least I do. You ideally want a card that’s cool and whisper quiet. Unfortunately, fans can still be noisy even with low RPMs - this is why I’ve modded my 3090 to attach Noctua fans… nice and quiet.

Good idea with the headphones, good solution for many people and they can make games even more immersive. I have, uh, larger ears ( ) that can get quite hot in headphones over time which makes (for example) most Sony over-ear headphones uncomfortable for me. My Razer gaming headset can also feel hot over time, because of low quality materials. I’m sure that premium headphones like the Focals would address this, but for these sorts of ‘comfort reasons’ I generally like to go headphones free where I can. Will keep that solution in mind though!

Honestly… send it back for the price you paid. I would be disappointed after watching that video, acceptable if the price was closer to the MSRP.

The fact that it's AIO pump turns off at idle/low loads (ODB) is absolutely amazing.

That movement must have been above me then, because I haven't budged from the low 50s position for a Zotac Solid for days.

Once your in game you barely notice a difference in graphics card IMO. I've had a blast on my 3050 that made me question why I had a 4090 previously lol. Mind my 9800x3d probably helped with that feeling.

This is so true. I was planning on selling my 4090 about 6 months ago so replaced it with my trusty RX570. Granted, I could only play games on low settings but I didn't mind once I was immersed in the game. That being said, I put my 4090 back and obviously having nice graphics does look amazing lol. Anyhow.. I sold my 4090 recently and I'm currently PC gamig on a handheld (Rog ally - the 1st gen white model) and I'm having a blast even if most game settings are low for constant 60 fps. I'm now re-considering if I really need that 5090 in my desktop and if I would just be fine with say a RX 9070 XT when it launches for playing games in medium/high settings @ 60 fps might just do me fine

Just watched this too.. Amazing temps as expected but very low to little noise makes this a big win for low noise systems. I didn't see if he measured for coil whine so I'm guessing there is none or anything that's audible?

I love the "indie and backlog time" that I spend when I downgrade prior to a release in waiting for a new card. I was using a GTX 1070 for this purpose for a while and it gave me the opportunity to "get back to gaming" and not worry about always having pedal-to-metal graphics. I'm using a 6950xt now (also after having sold my 4090 in late Nov) and the feeling is even more accute that I really, really don't need any thing more to enjoy games.
