NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

If it can then I'm happy to stand corrected

Doesn't say what DLSS setting where applied though but 4090 does 60fps actually. 5090 does above that of course

You're still making assumptions. Firstly that everyone is gaming at 4K and secondly that they'd use FG to raise framerates rather than perhaps dropping DLSS from quality to performance.

Making blanket claims that path tracing needs a 5090 is just ridiculous.
PT requires adjustment of the settings/upscaling for any GPU and will likely be that way for another 2-3 generations yet.

I've tried MFG with max settings on the games + X4 MFG, DLSS quality or balanced in the following with a 480Hz 1440p monitor

CP2077
Stalker 2
Ghostrunner 2
MSFS 2024
Indiana Jones

I haven't been trying to pixel peep or lookout for issues, just jumped in and played the games and they all felt really good, with very low frametimes I couldn't tell I had fake frames at all on any of them tbh.

Stalker 2 and Indiana Jones 2 had some moments of feeling off for split moments however, even though the FPS was reporting good numbers. Especially if I'm walking close to vegetation or surrounding objects or making small adjustments on the mouse, it did feel like something was slightly off here and there.

I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was actually in the non CP2077/MFS 2024 titles. And Stalker 2 and Indiana Jones are still very playable just moments where it feels slightly off, and I used a keyboard and mouse on all titles for lowest latency.

Keyboard Wooting and mouse lightspeed 2 could be that my high dpi didn't play nice with both games with mfg also (4000 dpi) so keep that in mind.

I didn't turn motion smoothing on in Nvidia, perhaps that helps for these two titles? Where I had issues.

Just a quick test in those games.

The update is on the landing page for the 50 series on the website.

Someone on here who is very low in the queue has had an updated dispatch date which looks to be next week. I’m in the same queue and it’s still ‘awaiting dispatch date’ with no ETA.

Sounds like I’m not in the first batch. Also sounds like they don’t have any stock of your card yet.
That’s a bummer. When they became available for pre-order, I picked the one that said 4-7th Feb rather than the 2-12 weeks ones. My confirmation email said it’d be shipping 31st Jan.
It’s the ASUS TUF OC, which was a good bit more than I wanted to pay… but the ‘promised’ delivery made it worth the few hundred £’s above the rest!

Will be a bit miffed if I could have one of the £2000ish 5090’s quicker.

Hey ho… will wait and see.

Here's a thought - why does the 5090 have a 512-bit bus? Where's the logic?

They could have stuck with 384-bit and 24GB of VRAM and, with GDDR7, still got a 30% bandwidth increase which would have neatly matched all the other increases on the card.
As it is, the 78% bandwidth increase is completely wasted as the card is 30% faster overall at best.
Maybe to do with the x4 Frame gen, or AI workloads?

It’s been a bit of a lottery for everyone, I wouldn’t feel too spited.

My confirmation email also said shipping 31 Jan. I also got an update (on the website love tracking) saying dispatch would be next week… but it updated and went back to TBC. D’oh.

Hopefully you’ll get it soon. The ASUS TUF looks particularly tank like :)

That’s a fair point although I’d be more worried with the 5080 as Indiana Jones is Nvidia sponsored.
Unfortunately this time around with no direct competition Nvidia are the ones that are encouraging increased vram usage. The 5080 should have been a 24GB card really. Yes there will probably be a 5080 super, but I never understand buying mid gen as you’re only 10 months or so away from the next gen and it’s not the latest tech then. I can see if people are building for the first time, but super cards to me are just a swan song to a soon to be outdated gen squeezing further money out of old tech before releasing the new gen!

32gb makes it easier in the mind of the consumer to justify the price increase.

It really does feel like the 5080 should have had 24Gb. There's way to much of an artificial gap between the 5080 and 5090. Clearly a deliberate tactic on Nvidia's part to upsell and perhaps leave room for a 5080Ti or 5080 Super.

I'd agree that 'super' cards are normally a complete waste of time but I wonder if this time round Nvidia might actually make an effort to introducea new process node and or increase the VRAM size with a future 5080 'super/ti"?

Makes you wonder how long it'll be until we see a 6000 series launch. Feels like the 5000 series could potentailly be quite a short lived range.

To be honest if I had known that the 50 series was such a poor uplift I would have kept my 4090, I sold it weeks before the reviews came out. My main reason behind selling it, is the fans on the Zotac 4090 AIRO extreme were horrible no coil whine but when they came on at 30% it was a mechanical noise which was off putting which in the end resulted in me using my older build with a 4070 FE more, as it was whisper quiet. I know some people said their Zotacs were fine but maybe as I had a launch day one there were issues (I’m not alone just search Reddit or YouTube) for this I would never buy a Zotac again, and yes I could have RMA’d it but I didn’t want to wait potentially 6 months without a card. My 3080 10GB was a PALIT and again not a bad card but had severe coil whine. The challenge is when you have bad experiences with card brands it limits your buying options. I’m happy as got the 2 slot SFF inno3d 5080. Its whisper quiet and stacks faster than my 4070 build. My preference was MSI or Asus but due to stock I wasn’t able to get one. My Asus 2080 Ti was a fantastic quality card!

Helpful to know your thoughts on the cards brands. Like everyone else I didn't manage to get a 5000 series card at launch . I'll wait until the 5070/5070ti cards release and see what they're like and if supply is any better.

My current GPU is too outdated to play any modern games so waiting indefinitely isn't an option though! I intend to buy something in the next few months!

I've updated my motherboards bios as I was getting hitching in windows, now I get none... wonder if that could have been what I was experiencing in game (I'll have to test again and report back)

I’ve played Indiana on both 4090 and 5080, and find it a boring game imo (maybe it’s not my kind of game).

On the 5080 for path tracing at 4K you have to drop the texture pool size by one setting and to be honest when it’s above medium (which I had to have on my 4070 stop gap card) I can’t tell a difference. I think it’s to do with how far in the distance it starts to render the texture detail.

It’s the 3080 10GB all over again, I had that at launch and was a cracking card for £700 ( I got slightly over msrp). But because of games like far cry which were AMD sponsored that required 11GB VRAM for ultra texture pack 10GB was deemed not good enough.
But there’s only less than a handful of games which exceed 16GB of VRAM and there’s no visual difference with an odd setting tweak.

But you will have people have you believe you need a 5090/4090 because of vram.

I say just get a 3090, that has 24GB and save money. Oh wait, 3090 users upgrading to 16GB cards. Lol

Careful, you'll get accused of working for Digital Foundry around here with that kind of praise.

The way I see it a card is only for 2 years give or take, so it’s not like a life decision. Appreciate everyone isn’t in the position to be able to upgrade every generation but if that’s the case the 5080 will still be a huge upgrade over a 10 or 20 series card. When I went from 2080 Ti to 3080 it was similar as downgraded from 11GB to 10GB but I survived it as I’m sure others would too lol
