NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

I just want a dp 2.1 card. Not at these prices though :(.

How do scalpers always seem to get so many at launches.

What issues are you looking to solve with DP2.1? Only asking as there may be compromises / workarounds that make you better off than sinking cash into a DP2.1 card.

If I recall it is about high refresh rates (240Hz) and high resolution.

Oh no issues to solve, yet. I have no need for 240hz refresh rate, just want it :p.

Its why I wont buy one - no need for it.

Ah, sure!

I bumped into DP2.1 issues on my 4k 160hz monitor. I kept getting ad hoc, very infrequent and short black screens in games. There is no option to disable DSC on the monitor and my ‘hunch‘ is that with variable framerates, windows / the monitor was getting confused whether it needed to use DSC or not.

Capping the monitor to 140hz seems to solve the issue.

So yes, I’m all aboard the DP2.1 train!

The original charts clearly show gains over 30% and were later swapped out to the realistic ones in a bait and switch.

The 5080 Far Cry 6 results were shown as the same as the 5090, which obviously can't be the case. Someone in marketing clearly messed up which required a ninja edit.

I just think it's funny how in this thread, it's perfectly acceptable for people to be pre ordering 5090s for £2500+, yet it's the people buying 5080's that are apparently driving the cost of GPUs up for everyone.

The hypocrisy in this thread is depressing.
People are disappointed with prices in general especially the AIB pricing and both contribute to driving up prices for everyone else so its not like it doesn't have a knock on effect but one is a class leading product while the other doesn't offer anything new.

The 80 is especially poor with the lowest uplift of any 80 class product in history, reviewed poorly so people are going to find it odd that some are willing to pay in certain cases 70% above MSRP for this card, obviously people can spend how they like but equally others can have an opinion.

Im so annoyed with myself that back in Dec 2022 I bought a new 4090 FE and decided to cancel it as it was too much money and opted for a few hundred £ less 7900xtx instead.

Meh.

Why, what's wrong with the 7900xtx? :p

Bit of a difference there though - the 5090 is close to top spec of the silicon and a reasonable if a bit underwhelming increase on the previous generation, the 5080 is in name only and barely worthy of more than the name 5060 let alone 5080 while priced high - which then sets a new point for the general consumer space if people are buying.

It's his money, he worked hard for it and will spend it as he sees fit!

Hold on, I heard this line elsewhere before :p

Both sides have a point in the end. But unfortunately for ne0 people will say what they will say.

So if I’m hypothetically upgrading from a 30 series today, what makes the 5080 such a bad buy?

A 5090 is a ghost and requires a 4 month wait, a used 4090 costs more than a new 5080 (if you can find one) yet a 5080 is easier to obtain, costs half of a 5090 and with an overclock can almost match the 4090. You also get the MFG.

So being pragmatic, and given these variables, the 5080 seems like a pretty good choice to buy today.

Am I missing anything?

As has been said before, no such thing as a bad GPU (generally), just a bad price, and the 5080 falls firmly into this category.

If you can secure one for FE price, not the end of the world i suppose. Even at that price it is around £200 too much. But if you need to upgrade, what can you do i suppose. Buy ProStreet's 7900xtx? :p
