NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

Damn the nvidia subreddit mods are really anti-bants.

Typical discussion board rules; no discussion of controversial…

current affairs.

Erm because they probably are, cables are not connectors and visa versa.

Did you read the read of my post that you selectively quoted from, or the post that I myself was quoting (where the manufacturer of the cable that melted stated that there was a difference and that people should upgrade)?

As in, this:

Either way, feel free to reply by way of a ‘herp derp’ laughing emoji.

Trigger much? Yes i read your ‘herp derp’ post of mixing capitalisation with lower case.

Unfortunately you still don't understand the difference between cables and connectors, you're more than welcome say what they changed with the cable, did they increase the gauge, did they move to solid core, change from aluminium to copper?

Don’t deflect - take responsibility for how you engage with others. In this case, you got a duly curt response because you have responded with a dismissive tone after not reading (or comprehending, but I expect not reading) what I had quoted… and seemingly ignoring the rest of my post in which I summarised additional conflicting info concluding that (i) it’s not clear and (ii) whatever the position is we all need it clarifying.

My “aLtErNaTing CaPs” remark (that you quoted) was made in light of it now being very unclear what the position actually is; it would IMO be a bit ‘herp derp’ to definitively say that the cables are all the same now that the manufacturer of the melted 5090 cable has expressly stated that there are differences between the cables that they have made, citing the changes in standards.

I did edit my post above to include this, but again here are the remarks from Moddiy that make it sound like there have been changes to their cables:

Moddiy said:
Our new cables incorporate significant advancements, including enhanced terminal and connector housing materials, along with thicker wires, to provide an additional safety buffer for the latest GPUs.

At MODDIY, all 12VHPWR / 12V-2X6 cables purchased from 2025 onward are manufactured in accordance with the new 12V-2X6 specifications and standards, en- suring compatibility and optimal performance with the RTX50 series GPUs. Prior to 2024, the RTX50 series GPUs had not yet been introduced, and the prevailing standard was 12VHPWR. All cables produced before this period were designed and tested for use with the RTX40 series GPUs.

We recommend that all users upgrade to the new 12V- 2X6 cables to take full advantage of the enhanced safety and performance features offered by this new standard.

Note: as a minor point, the list of so-called ‘significant enhancements’ is not written as an exhaustive list, leaving open that there are other changes beyond those stated here.

I can’t offer anything more specific than that but it quite clearly suggests, truthfully or not, that there have been changes to their ‘new cables’. Also, as a minor point, I had (shortly before this info from Moddiy was shared) advised another poster that the current consensus is that the cables probably are the same and the main changes are to the female connectors.

And yet - with all of the above taken into account - you say that I “still don't understand the difference between cables and connectors”…? =/ Anyway, hopefully you now see where I’m coming from.

Apologies to my fellow forumites for the ‘overdone’ post - I will not take it further *thumbs up*

A friend of mine just bought my 4080S for the full retail price I paid 11 months ago. He's been waiting for the 50 series, but got tired of waiting and asked if I'd sell. I guess I'll sit on the sidelines for a while and look at getting a 5080 around summer-ish maybe.
