Nvidia Shield

Actually came here to ask how Plex server runs on the Shield. Looks like there are lots interested but not many that can tell us the performance. As above I have my files on a NAS

Have a read through here for info, problems etc

Ive run into a problem and it wont boot, im getting the 4 circles continuously. Going to have to re-install 3.1 and start again :(

That is my question if the shield is used as a server then it would have to have the files on it to be a server. Would you use an External drive plugged into it?

Don't really see how much of a Benefit it would be putting the plex server on the Shield if people are using the Shield as a HTPC playing there files from a NAS. Iv'e not got the shield so im not 100% how it works. Can you put an HDD inside the Shield?

With plex it is the server that does the work when you transcode.

If you use just a NAS then IT has to do the hard part.

So you set the NAS as the Shields storage but run the server on the Shield and that way whatever your playing from (and that can be any device on your network) the shield does the work.

Most NAS drives cannot handle PLEX.

If your files are on a NAS then what good is the shield as a server to you. Then your NAS would be the plex server with the files on?

My NAS literally just houses the files. The Shield will be my server and dish up the files to whatever other device I want which has the Plex client on it be it my phone, tablet, my Now TV boxes or indeed my chromecast audios.

The Shield will do any transcoding so my videos will play on any of the devices even if they don't support the original file due to format or audio format etc.

And having the Shield as my server means I don't have to use my PC as my server so it doesn't have to be on all the time.

I've not had a great deal of time to play with it as yet and have only set it up with one library of stuff which is on a NAS which has pretty slow file transfer speeds, fine for one 1080p stream but not for any more really.

I've tested with the shield being the client and the server and all has been well the shield plays most things I've thrown at in in direct play mode which is obviously good.

I've tried a few films streaming to my Nexus 7 (2013) where it had to transcode the audio and that was no problem at all either.

I did test with a stream running on my shield and one on my tablet but my NAS couldn't keep up sadly. It was fine for streaming a video on the shield and music to the tablet though.

Only niggle I've encountered thus far is with films I've ripped from dvd to mkv then encoded to mp4 using vidcoder where by when streaming to my tablet they've had to be transcoded and the Shield seems to be ignoring that they are anamorphic so widescreen films are being squished to 4:3. The same files play fine on the shield client and on my tablet when my PC plex server transcodes them so that seems to be a slight bug with the Shield. I've posted about it on the NVidia website but not had any response as yet.

Overall my initial impressions are good from the limited playing I've done and the limited setup I had done so far (waiting on a new WD NAS for the rest of my media)

Going to pick one up as my primary playback device and server alongside a decent synology / QNAP NAS. I will then make a decision on what I want to do going forward in terms of playback devices and servers as I keep all my stuff in 1:1 quality from disc.

Tempted to buy one to replace my celeron based NUC as that struggles to transcode to other devices sometimes.

How easy is it to manage the media through the shield? At the moment I just have an external HDD plugged in to the NUC and when I need to add content I just plug in another USB HDD and copy it over (and refresh the plex server).

I'm tempted to do away with the NUC altogether but could use it as a NAS if needed.

Am I correct in thinking that all the DTS-HD / True HD passthrough issues have now been solved?

I have mine networked to the pc and ftp all media to the hard drive connected to the shield. Most of the time spmc see's the new stuff, if not a quick refresh does the job.

There's a new update for the Shield TV v3.3

Here's the full changelog.

DTS:X Audio: Experience immersive, lifelike audio with DTS:X pass-through in Plex, Kodi v17, and MX Player
Adds Dolby Atmos audio pass-through support in Plex
Delivers the latest monthly Android security updates
Adds support for Vulkan 1.0.1.0 Conformance Test Suite

Mine updated ok but after losing root it is easily fixed.
