I'd go second hand on that budget and try scoop a 4870.

New cards give you the opportunity to experience more detail, effects and better FPS than a console will allow.

I couldn't justify the money a mate of mine spends on his car but it makes him happy...

At the end of the day that is what matters.

To answer your question - An ATI 4850 can be had for as little as £40 on auctions sites:D and a 4870 which will play just about anything at a pretty good level of detail for around £70. I would say that's within most ppls budgets or if you can spend a little more a 4890 or a 5770 are good cards also, Nvidia wise a 8800gts or if you can get a little more cash maybe a gtx260. if you don't even go as high as a 4850 level card then don't get into pc gaming as anything less its pointless imo.

Edit: some guy on this gfx card forum under new 4870 is saying he got a brand new 4870 for £50 pm him and ask him where he got it and get that it will pee all over a 9500gt

i dont really like or agree to the references to cards being out of date for 6 months :S id say they are only superceeded after a year minimum and even then they are not "out of date" they will still work perfectly. its not like the cards just cease to work after 6 months. i mean my 5870 could do me for the next 4 years if i wanted even if it can only run the newest games at low settings at 1920x1200. it will still work and look amazing. and on a budget of £60? well brand new you wont get anything good enough for gameing, but as the guy says, you could have a very good 4850 for £40 on an auction sight!! even look out for a 1GB 4870 on an auction sigh for £60!

I agree with this. My current gfx cards (admittedly undergoing RMA atm) are 8800 GTX SLI's and can run anything thrown at them at 1920x1200 on full settings. (Though I think the most graphics intensive game i've played on them so far is Unreal Tournament 3 I think. Possibly fallout or mass effect if they're higher requirements?). Had plenty of problems with the computer etc for a variety of reasons but when the comp runs, the graphics are never the problem. The cards are now about 3 years old and I don't see them being 'out dated' any time soon. (at least not to the extent that games are coming out which won't even run cause the cards are too old.) Even with only one of the cards in the computer, I haven't noticed any lag or slow down in any of those games.

Games like knights of the old republic (1 and 2) run perfectly fine on my old comp even and that has an ati 9250 on it!.

Just because something new is out, does not mean the current card becomes useless.

Yes a PS3 can be had for say 300 or so but then it's upto you whether or not you want to invest in PC gaming. I have both atm because there are some games that I just want a console for and other's (mainly FPS's) that I hate on console's and need a PC for.

I can't justify the $$ you guys spend on graphics cards but, only for it to become out of date in 6 months.

Yeah right. If you are playing 5 years old games on some 15" 1024x768 with the lowest settings possible then yes, the 9500GT will be great, good for you.

I have a HD 24" screen. Just explain to me the hardware needed to play those games I like on decent quality: DAO, Far Cry 2, L4D2, BatmanAA, CoDMW2, RE5, NFS:S, Grid, HAWX, Stalker:CS, Dirt2, Crysis and so on..

And I don't think I'm the only one playing those games above, at that screen size/resolution..

Let me help you.

And that's a 9800GT. Tested with an
i7 920 @ 3.8 GHz.

Want me to continue? Do you understand now why a 9500GT won't do the job?

I can't justify the $$ you guys spend on graphics cards but, only for it to become out of date in 6 months. I always loved ATI and this is my first Nvidia card. I will see how it goes, but im not about to spend £150+ on a card when I could buy a PS3 for not much extra, so what card would you guys buy on a budget of say £60?

whats your point exactly? you paid £250 for your ps3 and it has been "out of date" since it came out two years ago.

It seems I have a lot to learn about PC Gaming. I *thought* the 9500GT would do the job and to be fair, I have yet to properly test it but it seems my $$ would have been better spent on a higher end card. Regardlesss of what I buy it will be out of date in 6 months, hence I stick to the PS3 for gaming. I went from an old ATI HD2400 card to an Nvidia 9500GT which is some difference in my case. Apologies for rambling on. My mate assured me I would not need anything more than the 9500GT. FS2004 has never looked better but I guess COD or Crysis will test the card properly. Im sorry but I cannot justify spending £100+ on a GPU, only for it to become out of date in 6 months.

With all due respect Duran the PS3 is a superior gaming console. I can't knock the 9500GT until I have tried it, but from some of the videos I have seen on Youtube it would seem a decent card (IMO) of course.

The 9500 may play your old games but on resolutions 1650x1050 the ATI 4770/4850 or nvidia 250 are really considered good choices i.e still do the job for new games 6 months down the line.

Thats the nature of technology thats like saying you want buy a mobile because there will be better phones out in 6 months there will be but it doesn't mean yours will suddenly stop working.

as for £60 to spend new i'd get a 4670 or Nvidia 240 but try stech to a 4770/4850.

2nd hand 4850/4870 or 8800,9800,260.

Oviously if your playing on a 19" monitor 1024x720 your playing on the resolutions the PS3 games are outputting so you only need a card like the 9500.

Sorry you have a 5850? For that you get a gold Blue Peter badge. I only asked for some thoughts/opinions on the forum but it seems I should I have said nothing. You seem to have some issues giving advice and choose to patronise people which makes me think your only a kid anyway. Good night.

1024x720 resolution  Which 19" monitor has that low resolution ??

19" monitors are normally
1280x1024 for 4:3 19" monitors
1440x900 for 16:9 19" monitors

People have give their thoughts and opinions and if it's not, "keep the card it's great", then they are cursed at and you get all defensive. Would you rather we lie to you and tell you it's a top notch cheap card, and then you buy a couple games to find they don't even work?

Honest opinion: That card won't play new games at high settings on a high resolution, for your budget, (whatever that is as you seem to be comparing a 9500gt to a ps3 which are totally different prices ) get a ps3.

what do you mean? the ps3 is completely "out of date" compared to a graphics card that costs £120 these days and you paid £250 at least for it.

Troll thread.
Utterly pointless.
OP's annoyed he bought a pathetic card and tried to game with it, and now he's trying to say we're stupid for paying loads for our cards, because a PS3 will play games for X years, well so will my 5870..

Superior to what exactly?

You need to calm down with the aggro, you're watering down the validity of your opinions by getting so uppity when some one doesn't agree with you.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but seriously calm down, there's no need for the way you've acted.

The PS3 is out of date full stop, sub £80 graphics cards make a show of the PS3.

I love my PS3, but he's not kidding anyone by pretending it's something it isn't.

Gaming consoles are for people who can't afford PC Gaming(90% of them), so knock anything related to PC Gaming.

Your own fault for not doing research before buying, and your mate is THICK.

I had a PS3 all of.....3 weeks......it's utterly boring & graphics are bloody daft.

I was holding off for my Gaming PC because of high prices, so bought a PS3, it was that crap, i sold it and ordered PC 1 week later.

Console games have a life span of a couple of weeks at most, PC Games you can play for years, add to fact online play & graphics and no stupid mental kids online. PC Gaming is the winner.

Do us all a favour, and stick to a console.
