O2 - anyone else just had notice of a 17.8% increase

Work will this hit the point mobile contracts going forward? If you've just started a 3 year contract at 40ppm it's now 47ish? Or is the 40 split device and airtime?

Why would anyone still have a phone contract? Everyone knows SIM only is the way to go.

£7/m for 30GB.. no idea if there's a price increase coming and tbh don't care if there is as it will still be peanuts :p

Because it was cheaper for me to get a contract than buy the phone outright.

Although if ID raise it as much as some of the numbers mentioned in here it'll probably now be cheaper to just pay it off before the bump :o

4 sim only contracts with Virgin - up 17% but the most expensive is £9 a month so "only" £1.50 or so increase on that.

Whole family are sim only - £27 a month combined for 4 sim only contracts on Virgin. Been like that for years.

Even the kids 15/11 have phones that are a couple of years old but only cost £200 etc - Neither of them want for expensive phones as they do the job fine for snapchat/whatapp/tiktok or whatever they watch these days!

Never understood people buying £60/70 a month contracts for the latest phone for their kids.

If it's anything like my Volt contract I started last March, it will go up regardless of when the contract started. Mine went up by >10% a month after I signed up, but because I was (just) out of the 14 day cooling-off period I couldn't cancel. complete malecowfaeces IMO, but what can you do?

Not sure how it works wrt the split in device/airtime though, however with this guaranteed increase in mind, it seems that shorter contracts will work out significantly cheaper?

E.g.

12 months = (total cost/12 * 12)
24 months = (total cost/24 * 12) + (((cost/24)*1.1) * 12)
36 months = (total cost/36 * 12) + (((cost/24)*1.1) * 12) + (((cost/24)*1.21) * 12)

When you enter a contract there shouldn't be price hikes like this. I hate contracts where it rises mid contract.

Absolutely milking it they are.

Yeah, it's really ****. Tempted to cancel and go pay as you go, problem is, then I lose my boosted speed with Virgin :(

A possible way out might be to request a plan change, then cancel under the cooling off period.

In theory if it's a genuine price increase, then all plans they sell on their website should go up X% on the day and stay that way. It'll certainly be interesting to see if they do any "deals" after this date back on old pricing.

I think it's both, not just airtime increases. It's worse for a 3 year contract in a way as you'll be subjected to 3 of these mid-term price rises. You could start a contract out on £50/month, and by end of year 3 be paying at least £62/mth, probably more like £66/month.

Yeah kind of what I was getting at.
Going to be hard selling these 1k phones spread over 3 years when could get an 17pc rise and then maybe another 10pc and another. Especially if you take out the contract just before the price rises.

Something I never really thought about.

I'm not one for contracts myself. Not once they started going to 24 months. But this will stick in people's minds I expect.
A 50ppm contract could end up in excess of 70 by end.

just got email about the price increase guess now stuck with it till contract ends,

I always buy phone outright current one Xiaomi Mi11 which I paid at the time £500 from china and flashed EU rom job done still runs great, no interest in upgrading phones seem to have gone stale

And I used to get sim only 30 day contract deals last one being lebara I dont use much data was 5gb 1p a month for 6 months 5g as well got faster speed than home broadband at 150-200mb found it fun finding deals and super easy to switch number over and not being tied down

with virgin media contract ending I renewed they offered 02 sim , 135mb broadband + 02 sim 4gb data £26 took it I should have held out for something better :(

dont have FTTP in area so Virgin only ones that can offer faster speeds

We've been sim only with Tesco for a few years now, three phones. Going up 10.5% CPI plus 3.9%. Huge percentage rise but not a lot in cash terms but I don't agree with mid term price rises really.

I'm with giffgaff and I can't find anywhere that they're doing a price increase. They did commit to fixing their prices until the end of 2023, so maybe that also means no mid-term hikes too.

Not had a message yet but according to the calculator on ID's site I'll be going from £33.99 to £38.50. Not the end of the world but far too close to £40p/m for my liking.

Lotsnof people I know on EE have had a 17% increase via text or email. I haven't had anything though. I'm SIM only atm, will be looking to greatly reduce my SIM only deal next month.
For EE it's 14.4% not 17.8% as they use CPI instead of RPI. I'm on EE SIM only as well, the email they sent me only included the actual price it was going up with no mention of the percentage, but doing the maths it ended up just under 14.3%

While not as bad as O2's 17.8% it's still high...

EDIT: BT is also using CPI, although should be expected seeing BT and EE are the same company.

It looks like I can cancel my O2 contract without losing my Virgin speed boost, so just on hold atm - 40 min queue!

So far in the last 24 hours, I've had:
VM - £7 increase
Sky - £6 increase
O2 - £2 increase

So a total of £15, on an original combined cost of £84, that's almost 18%!

Luckily they're all coming to an end in the next couple of months, but the most annoying thing is, I know I'll end up paying no more than I am at the moment, it just means I need to waste time calling up and pretending to cancel

I think it's a matter of just refusing the pay increases where possible or cancelling the contract and moving to someone else cheaper.

Every company is probably going to try push increases now. Once someone does it they all start to copy.

Wish I could swear on these forums on how much I detest this sort of stuff.

I expect I'll end up with this plus about 10£ additional sky.
Interesting times, I'm sure lots of people will adjust services to lower out goings

Exactly what I'm doing, definitely looking to "reward" this behaviour by trimming services.

My email from Virgin says at the bottom:

If you're not happy with any of the changes announced in this email, including those to our out of home WiFi hotspots and pricing terms and conditions, you can change or cancel your package, including your Volt O₂ sim, any time before 4th April 2023, without paying any cancellation fees.

Currently in the queue to speak to O2, so will report back - looks like GiffGaff (£10 for 20GB) or ID (£7 for 15GB) are the best options for 1 month SIM only unless anyone has any recommendations?

Considering how giffgaff works as "30 day" contracts and they mentioned they fixed price till end of 2023, for anyone who needs an O2 based network they seem to be the best option to go for.

iD Mobile is based on Three and it looks like they'll notify users about price rises in March: https://www.idmobile.co.uk/cpi
