O2 - anyone else just had notice of a 17.8% increase

O2 reckon I need to pay the termination fee, but he's gone to check with his manager.

From that ID Mobile link:

The April 2023 CPI +3.9% adjustment will apply if you've upgraded to or purchased a new iD Mobile 24-month handset plan on or after 1st November 2022 and before 1st February 2023.

I'll probably be getting a 1 month SIM only, and it's after 1st Feb, so I'd be surprised if that applied (and even if so, I could just cancel)

probably better to ask Virgin about 02 volt as its in Virgins email you can cancel VOLT which includes 02 sim

I would love to cancel the 02 sim and just try get deal with virgin broadband only dont have FTTP here so only Virgin offer the best speeds and go with 30 day rolling sim only elsewhere

Just cancelled my virgin broadband (£50 p/m increasing got £57) along with my virgin mobile deal which was £31 + £22 p/m for 100gb data + device, been with them for 12+ years. Going for an unlimited smarty sim only deal for £16 and will use 4G/5G tethering instead.

So outgoings are going from £103 p/m to £47 for 5 months, then down to just £16 a month after my phone is paid off, yes I will lose the stability of a home broadband connection, but as I live on a hill, I should be able to get 5G most of the time with a strong 4G connection at all othertimes.

didnt they not try to offer you anything better ?

I've just ordered a £9 25gb simm only with virgin as my EE sim only ends this month, I will try it out and hopefully save 50%

Yeah, just calling them now - only problem with your suggestion is losing the speed boost from having the Volt o2 SIM, which does make their pricing less competitive - same issue here with lack of FTTP, and I'm not sure 4/5G would be fast/stable enough for working from home and online gaming?

They offered to wave the increase and an additional £3.50 discount on the broadband, they also offered to match Smarty on their unlimited plan but were only able to offer a 5G capable service (which I've had for 3 years anyway) Virgin Media only provide 5G in a few areas in the South West neither of which do anything for me, Smarty have 5G in my home town and infact can provide upto 550mbps at my home according to coverage maps.

This is going to be fun. VM have transferred me straight over to O2... :p

Depends on the gaming you do and the area your in, I've been able to game just fine using 4G for things like Path of Exile or WoW, but competitive games like CS or Fortnite where latency is vital it may not be viable.

A bit of everything really, I do sometimes play fast paced shooters (despite my age related lack of reflexes...), and I have a server that me and a few mates play on, so probably not feasible :(

you could try Smarty sim only 30 days see how it goes if not go through the broadband compare deals and sign back up as new customer where they usually give decent deals

If you're hosting a server then moving to mobile broadband is a bad idea as it'll most likely use CGNAT, where the IP you've been provided is shared with other customers making port forwarding an absolute mess.

Thing to do is to try it, see how it fares with your current phone connection if your able to use it for tethering.

exactly what I have done, will have the simcard tomorrow.

That's a good plan, I'll see if I can figure out how to connect my phone to my router :D

I haven't had an email or text from O2 yet. I'm on SIM only and signed up on a Black Friday deal for 12 months.

Just got a text from them. A +13% increase here, but that's already bad as I let last year lapse as had little time to manage. So it's increased before already.

Switching away from O2, had a bad incident with them about 12 years ago when they allowed someone to blag away into accessing my account and then adding multiple phones (Iphones) onto my account via credit and then needing to conduct a fraud investigation. They supposedly added further protections, but I honestly can't believe them. Anyway, back then, unlimited calls and texts (and being able to call to International Numbers; which I can now do with Data now) were essential, not anymore since that's basic package now (for calls and texts). Stayed for data extras about 10 years ago, but those are not that essential now either given many packages also offer those, and also I'm mostly at home these days.

So ditching them for price. Likely moving to Sky Mobile for a rolling contract instead. £7 for 3GB vs £10 for 10GB of data, which I barely get through 1GB a month anyway on contract right now. So, after 20 years of O2, finally switching to another provider. Given the amount of time I've been with them, they likely could offer me something very nice, but again, the account issue with them is where my concerns are and feel it's time to simply restart elsewhere.

I have had a email saying my virgin will be going up £9. My bill is only £27 so that's a 33% increase. They have said that I can leave if I don't like it. Surely contracts are supposed to work both ways!?

In that case it is working both ways if they're allowing you out of the contract without a penalty.

My email from Virgin says at the bottom:

If you're not happy with any of the changes announced in this email, including those to our out of home WiFi hotspots and pricing terms and conditions, you can change or cancel your package, including your Volt O₂ sim, any time before 4th April 2023, without paying any cancellation fees.

I cant do anything canceling Volt O₂ sim unless it stated on the email guess it probably depends when you signed up

Volt customers do not have a right to cancel their O2 SIM unless specifically outlined in the letter or email we sent to you.
