o2 "confirm" new iPhone in 'weeks'....

I've been waiting for the new one to come out before I buy, mainly because my contract doesn't run out until August!

Will been keeping an eye on this :)

yup. After previous experiences with them (which I won't go into here) I wouldn't touch o2 with a barge pole.

I do hope that it's a 3G phone and not just 2.0 firmware and O2 launching some business tariffs, with proper Exchange Server support coming in the new firmware.

I'd be super suprised if this isn't the 3G model.

The rumor mill has been going flat-out for months with rumors. It would be nice if the 2.0 software hits pre-WWDC, with the 3G handset focus at the event.

Any prices floating about? Can't see them having the 8gb back up to version 1 starting price after it went to £169??

Not everywhere discounted though, so you'd be mega-peeved if you bought a gen 1 iPhone for the full price then a month later the gen 2 was cheaper :)

I wouldn't be surprised if it was 169 with a paper contract, or more expensive if you just want to buy the unit.. I really don't think the cheap price+iTunes activation will continue in it's current form.

I think it's in Apple's best interest to keep the iPhone seperate from the contracts, they are in a good position because it means they can sell hardware even if the customer doesn't take out the contract. I know for a fact they they have sold more phones because of the ability to unlock them and use them on any network, I know I don't want to be locked into a £35/month contract. Also remember that if you decide to unlock the phone then Apple doesn't care because they don't have to support it, you've paid for the hardware.

Apple DOES care if you unlock it because they make the majority of their money from the revenue sharing agreements on the contracts; which is why the unlocked phones in other areas are massively more money. Apple will also support un-activated phones, they just won't support grey imports.

A lot depends on the contents of the contracts Apple has signed with the various comms providers, which unfortunately nobody knows. O2 may well have an exclusive agreement for Apple phones in the UK for 10 years, with x% contract revenue returned to apple.. or they could have a short contract that only covers iPhone V1. Either way I think the phones will either be more expensive, or come with paper contracts next time around.

I do think that Apple will change the way the iphone is sold making the user take out a contract before the phone is sent/taken away from the shop like any other contract phone sold in the UK.

I suspect Apple will be getting a lot of pressure from the mobile phone companies they have exclussive deals with regarding how easy it is to unlock the V1 phones. Apple will know that regardless of what they do every phone will eventually be unlocked. Easiest way to ensure that the phone is used with the correct contract is to make the buyer take out the contract before giving them the phone.

Well that case they've lost a sale from me.

I really hope apple keep it the way its been, if they *really* want to make it hard to crack then they would have done already. Plus the V2 BETAs have already been cracked.

I have the money now to buy one, Its just im NOT getting a £35 contract. Get stuffed to that lol.
