Obsidian New RPG Avowed

On holiday at the moment so can’t easily check, so how big is the download?

I’ve only got a couple of weeks of GP left but might get another sub if it’s worth it.

I don’t think it’d be worth £60 anyway, so GP looks like the better bet.
xbox show 72gb of space needed for install if that helps at all.

Just finished the game possibly around 20+ hours (yes, I'm on holiday from work). Most side quests done.
I went ranger dual pistols (one of which had the faster reload perk).
Lots of hard choices to make along the way.
Story is OK, I fast read most of it.
Mantling and generally getting around is great, feels fast and fluid. Searching is rewarded.

Feels like Hogwarts Legacy but on a different world.

As soon as the credits rolled I uninstalled. Won't be going back to it.
I got my Gamepass value for money. Now back to KCD2

I suspect a lot of the "marmite" of the reviews comes down to what the player expects/qualifies an RPG to be. From what I've seen and read (on here and elsewhere) it sounds like Avowed is a good game but a poor "RPG", so I suppose its understandable that opinions on the game will differ depending on what "RPG" is defined as for each person.

I guess the crux of what I am saying is that Avowed seems like a game that you need to be absolutely sure what it is you are looking for in an "RPG", otherwise you may end up disappointed.

I think that if someone gets on with the visuals and doesn't get bored of the combat while enjoying exploring, that they'll probably get on with it as a sort of RPG-Lite experience. If they're going in expecting a Pillars of Eternity (which it's tonally very different from in almost every respect) experience in first person, and extensive RPG mechanics/storytelling (as in choices mattering) there's a good chance that they wont.

It's not an awful game, it's just not what I expected or wanted from Obsidian with that setting. Given it's on Games Pass there's no harm in trying it out and finding out if it's your cup of tea, but spending £60 is something I'd struggle to recommend to anyone personally.

Spent a couple of mins checking out graphics, looks ok but horrible vignetting? (where you see the brightness change after you've looked at a brighter light source then somewhere darker) it's like it's on a second or so delay. Will have to wait for a mod or config fix as that **** drives me mad, CP2077 was terrible for it too but luckily someone modded it out.

It's 72GB, but not sure if there's an update on top of that, since I just left mine going.

Tried it for a bit this evening. It doesn’t seem bad....as such.

Just seems quite average/vanilla and basic to be honest.

Graphics are quite nice and it runs quite well on my 4070 with everything on epic at 1440p.

Maybe i'm getting old and grumpy, but so many games seem so 'twee' and childishly written. I don't think there are enough adult orientated games/stories out there to be honest.

That's half my problem with it, the game is set in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity, and both PoE games were quite mature and dark in terms of storytelling, the thematic shift is something I'm really struggling with.

Tried the series X version since its crashing so much on my PC and my god its a slog.
Feels like 20 fps on so called high graphics mode yet looks terrible compared to PC on the same monitor as my PC btw.
Framerate is shocking so i had to turn on their so called performance mode, not even sure if its hitting anywhere near 60 fps and looks really bad.
I hope i can get the crashing sorted.

What are your PC specs exactly, and what troubleshooting have you tried?

I've read that locking frame rate ( on PC ) to a max of 60fps can help reduce or eliminate crashes.

7800X3D + 4070, tried everything suggested online, disabling RT,DLSS,FG,Verified files etc
I will try limit frames to 60 as mentioned i had it locked to 165.

You're up to date driver wise etc, aye?

Might sound like an odd recommendation, but if you have your RAM set to EXPO/XMP disable it and see. I once had crashes in World of Warships and literally nothing else due to XMP being enabled some years ago, running base and putting the RAM settings in manually entirely solved things, it was literally the only game that caused the problem.

If it crashes to desktop then it might not be hardware. If it crashes the pc (i.e blue screen or reboots) then it will be hardware related.

That's the thing woth playing newly released titles some of them are not fully stable yet.

The more I play the more I love it. The devs have done such an amazing job at removing tedium from the genre, and have just left the fun parts. I've seen people complain that there's no lock pick mini game, which is hilarious because people complain about them in every other RPG, and usually one of the first mods made is to remove it, other than boobs ofc. I actually said "thank god" when I started to lock pick and all I had to do was hold down the key, especially after playing Kingdom Come Deliverance which has the worst lock pick mini game in existence IMO. It's refreshing to see a dev focus on fun instead of making everything a chore and miserable, or "realistic". I watched that stupid Oblivion vs Avowed video that's doing the rounds ATM and 90% of it is irrelevant nonsense, like arrows not falling from you sky, who the hell cares? The only thing I do miss is guards stepping in during fights, that's a fair criticism.

I guess.

However Avowed is much more like an action adventure game with some RPG elements than an actual open world RPG.

Like a lot of "new" games it feels kind of dated.

So many new games feel so static and flat. It really feels like we are going backwards.

I dont know about going backwards, maybe staying static would be more what I'd call it, imo we really should be pushing the boundaries more than we are currently in games, its 2025, gaming has been around for over 40 years and yet we dont really seem to be making much headway in what we, as a player, are able to do in a game. We still have games for example with massively scripted events, like there is a quest to save someone who is being held hostage by a bandit but you cant just stand 40m away and headshot the bandit to save the hostage...nope, not allowed to do that because the quest insists that you must interact with the bandit. Lame.

Or, you have to acquire a Sacred Medallion of Darkness which is being kept in a box in a church, but you cant wait til night time when the church is empty, climb the walls , break in through the window, smash the box and take the medallion, because the game insists that you cant smash the box, thats not allowed, you can only open the box by acquiring the key and to get the key you have to go to the priests room and he will only give you the key if you do X for him (cant just kill him and take the key...thats not allowed) and so on.

Halfway through the 2020s, our games, ESPECIALLY RPGs, really should be pushing the boundaries of player freedom and allowing the player to think outside the box and come up with their own solutions rather than forcing a specific solution.

But thats just my opinion :)
