Octopus Power Ups and Free Energy Sessions

I reduced my overnight charge, but I seriously underestimate how bad today has been,at 1pm my battery was at 45%, currently generated just 8.9kWh.

Won't have a full battery for the Flux period, may just discharge a bit further than usual.

Yeah its even rained here and supposed to be at least dry all day.
There was an outside change of 600kwh for the month, I needed 13.5 today, 99% thats not going to happen.

I contemplated force-exporting ~6kWh of battery power but in the end I decided not to bother. I exported a near-perfect 4.8kWh during the hour and wouldn't have been able to rack up ANY net import power (solar producing >6kW so charging batteries at max rate = 0 import) without resorting to stupid stuff like running electric heaters in the garden. Had the car been home I could have popped 7kWh into that but it isn't so that's moot.

Hats off to those of you who can manage to get a net benefit from this though, on an overcast day with the car at home this would be mega. Ideally they'd run this at 9pm but I understand why they don't!

Managed 8.1kWh on Saturday.

Got the results today:

You've used £5.60 of Free Electricity so far ⚡

Here’s a breakdown of how you did:

  • On Sunday 18th August, you used 6.43kWh extra electricity, worth £1.49. You used 6.43kWh during the session and based on your meter data from the previous few weeks, you'd normally have used 0kWh at this time.
  • On Wednesday 21st August, you used 6.03kWh extra electricity, worth £1.4. You used 6.04kWh during the session and based on your meter data from the previous few weeks, you'd normally have used 0kWh at this time.
  • On Saturday 31st August, you used 8.02kWh extra electricity, worth £1.86. You used 8.05kWh during the session and based on your meter data from the previous few weeks, you'd normally have used 0.03kWh at this time.

Actually made £1.19 on Saturdays session, was actually pretty cloudy here so only generating about 1Kw at most, so with battery charging and dishwasher and tumble dryer running I was drawing over 5Kw, normally only manage about 25-30p per session.

I've not received anything for the last free leccy session.

I know I had a missing baseline smart meter reading (24.08 1-1:30pm) so be interesting to see what happens.
I had to nudge them to produce my bill and my bill has the missing smart meter reading shown (the one above) after they had the data fixed. Which I think is just asking the system to poll you meter for history.

Its only like 50p because agile was cheap anyway. But its a dangerous thing if missing history can stop you getting the correct payout when you may use a chunk more.

Making it 0p or crediting for extra used both rely on 30 minute data so it wouldn't solve any issues. In the case of free energy windows they want to encourage extra use which is understandable, so making all energy in that time cost 0p is not optimal.

Hope they continue into the winter with all the wind power that will be available.

  • On Wednesday 21st August, you used 10.78kWh extra electricity, worth £2.65. You used 10.79kWh during the session and based on your meter data from the previous few weeks, you'd normally have used 0.01kWh at this time.
  • On Saturday 31st August, you used 10.89kWh extra electricity, worth £2.67. You used 10.9kWh during the session and based on your meter data from the previous few weeks, you'd normally have used 0.01kWh at this time.

Isn't that exactly what power ups are though? Only difference being you have to spend it first, it gets included in your usage / spending, then you get it credited back later.

They require 30 minute data regardless.

I'm not sure mine is right.

On Saturday 31st August, you used 1.47kWh extra electricity, worth £0.46. You used 6.11kWh during the session and based on your meter data from the previous few weeks, you'd normally have used 0kWh at this time.

So if i'm understanding that they will be charging me for 6.11 of peak and crediting me back just 1.47. Despite my baseline being 0.

As I only ever draw peak usage during my IOG window (@7p) i'm not going to use these sessions any more as it's not worth the risk of them doing their sums wrong.

I did say the free electric windows but power ups are just region or postcode specific so maybe its something to do with that, maybe there are also regulatory reasons?
