Octopus Power Ups and Free Energy Sessions

I have two infrared heaters, and a fan heater, might have to dig them out for the free electric sessions in the winter.

Every little helps.

I think both of our fan heaters are 2kw, but for a powerup session (typically 2 or 2.5 hours) its quite noticeable on our gas usage that day. Adding around 8kw of heat from them shows in the winter gas usage.

Wait, what is this baseline thing about? I only swapped to Octopus a week ago - Am I still going to be charged during the free sessions then? I thought I would just get everything free during the hour?

Nah, the software will look at what you normally use, then for the "free" period won't charge you for anything you use above that target.

That's how I understand it anyhoo.

I saved 2p the last time.

The bassline works in the same way as the saving session did, except it ignores export.

For a weekend session IIRC they take the last four weekend days that were not free sessions, and work out your average for the session time, that is your baseline.

For weekday sessions, its the last 10 weekdays, which were not free sessions.

The only electric you get free is the amount above your baseline.

As you can see, you will not have enough smart meter data with Octopus to qualify, you can still sign up, but don't use any extra as you will be charged, but you will receive a credit based on an average of everybody's free sessions.

Cor, this one was as well timed. Car SOC was low, house was cold, battery empty, dishwasher primed and a big pile of washing to wash and dry.

Been able to draw around a constant 18kw for the first hour and a half, just scaling back to around 13kw now.

Chunky.
Opposite here, well house batteries I got down to 13% so they went to 100% and I had the water switched off so that hasn't heated since Sunday. That took a decent chunk.
DW was less than a half load so didn't get done, and could have done a wash but was told not to as visitors coming.
Its warm here like 20C and sunny on off so deffo no heating needed.

Probably one of my worst sessions.

I keep hovering over buying an oil filled 2.5kw on Ebay for £30. Its not going to pay for itself but I prefer them to fan heaters which we use a couple of during winter PUs.
Its a timer one as well so no risk of missing the big turn off just before a session ends. Managed that a few times last winter, stuck on a call or something.

Facebook Marketplace. There are load of them for sale near me for throw away money.

damn...... so i should have my figures now? i may need to chase it up.. my usual usage is zero and the truth is i wont save any money as i was exporting in both the last saving sessions and i lost that... however the reason i did it was just to help balance the grid and to help stop curtailment.

however as it stands i am being charged a fair bit as i charged 2 cars during the last 2 free sessions, and neither have tracked (i was not around for the rest of the saving sessions hence am new to this... i am on octoplus and i did sign up)
