*** OcUk 2011 Distributed Computing Competition ***

Can't believe i missed this post till now....
with seti down, hopefully my backlog will tide me through with some credits daily- also going away, but hey, I'm
"in it to win it"
:)

in it to win it

Just noticed this comp! Nice!

PS lol oops, just noticed that it started on the 21st so assume too late (if it matters, I have been crunching anyway since then if not everyday since I joined the team lol)

hi culinia, nay lad your not too late plenty of time you only need 14 days of credit out of the 8 weeks the competition runs.

I see you there at number 86 will keep my beady eye on you incase you start any of this stomping/parping malarky ;):)

aaah, my project is coming online too late for this. I'm gonna try and get my school to fund 3 2600K's and maybe some Kick ass GPU's as well.

What's better...3 2600K's or some lesser processors with better GPU's?

maybe less, maybe more, depends how good i am at convincing them this is a worthy cause.

It depends entirely what project you want to go with, and whether you want to be efficient, or just plain flat out number crunching.
For Seti, gpu power still seems to be holding up, but they're monstrous in terms of computing power per watt. according to the wiki, the 560Ti's are most efficient in terms of GFLOPs/watt.
For folding@home, the emphasis seems to be with cpu power, where extra points are given to completion of big units, and running gpus alongside uses up too much cpu power that the gain in points is less than the amount taken away from the cpu.
Then again, are you doing this to complete wu, or to gain points? :)
edit: my tuppence :)
