*****OcUK Benchmark Results from ATI HD 69xx Series*****

GT580 @ stock settings running Heaven for 20mins. This is within an average Antec 300 case with just one inlet and outlet fan. 580's run cool and so will 570's. During gaming my card reaches mid to late 60's.

Maintaining very similar performance. They are however more expensive and not really worth the money IMO.

HD6950 are very decent cards on the other hand.
You pays a premium for fastest and best. The GTX 580 is cool, quiet and clearly the fastest gaming card money can buy. It is not meant to be a bargain card. The 6950/6970/570's offer better value, but value is not top of the list for 580 owners, performance is.

So I have the spec below. Running pretty happily powering a U2711 (2560x1440). However, the heat REALLY bothers me. Could I get away with swapping the 4870x2 for a 6950/70? In fact, considering my M/B supports x8/x8 Crossfire, could I buy two of them? Or what that be greedy and unnecessary (being capped by my current CPU)?

Thanks in adv!

^^Tried lowering your idle clocks? Or does it bother you in game as well? :)

It's just games it bothers me in. I manually control fan speed when in 2D and 3D. But in the summer months it can be torture!

I'm just wondering if 6950 CF would be overkill for my current setup? I can't sacrifice performance due to the want to play at such a high res. Stuck with current CPU as I'm waiting for Sandy Bridge, like everybody else ;)

I know what you mean about the heat! :) My PC sits justs to the right of my desk and many a time I am surprised at how warm it gets around my lower legs.

In terms of being cpu limited, there is a forum member (I think his name is Vorticalspace), that bought a 580gtx with a Q6600 @ 3.2 iirc. I think he might be a good example of someone to ask about it.

My opinion? I'd say you won't get your full monies worth, but it will run well and should only be noticable on certain games, AA usage and resolution dependent, of course. :)

I come back on and check benchmarks and appears to me:-

6950 good value and overclockable (at 220 yes, over that hmmmm..).

6970 best not talked about (even at 280).

Feel bit like a character on Jeremy Kyle Show, who goes to find out if his other half has been using his razor on her legs.....and finds out about shenanigans with her and the local rugby team!(oh and the razor was her too!).
Disappointed really...looks like a 6950 with view to crossfire or a miracle price drop on 570gtx is all I can hope for now.:(

With a O/C'ed Q6600 powering it, though? :p

mate im not in the same boat as you, but have similar specs, P5Q Pro, and have a 1920 1200 res. i just bought a 570. I think the x8 lanes would hold it back in xfire, as well as the CPU, a single 6950 might be an option tho.

I too am waiting for sandy bridge IF i upgrade - the 570 (MSI @ £270) seems the best bet- can be overclocked to 580 speeds (although i wont see the benefit of that on the q6600). I would rather be GPU limited than CPU limited, and can still use the card if i upgrade to a better CPU/chipset.

the 6950 seem very good if you are looking to go xfire with sandy so is probably the way to go (looking at your res). just my useless 2p!
