OCUK Binned i7 7700k's - Only 4.8Ghz??

They can all do 4.8Ghz....

I may be mistaken, but I read in another thread that binned Kaby Lake's would only be sold in bundles so I'm guessing this is it??

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/detail/index/sArticle/65056

Correct you are guessing, and you are mistaken.
They are not binned. It states no where on the page, that it's binned.

The components cost no more than they do alone, it's just that we're providing you with a guide for the Overclock, and recommending a suitable hardware configuration that we have tested, and know works.

OFC, you can just buy what you want and use 8packs settings or your own nothing stopping you. This is just a hardware configuration.

Fair enough, but the selling point is 4.8ghz.

I just look back to my rubber keyed 48k spectrum and think WOW at what we have now.

I'm from that generation too. The computing technology I have now is literally beyond my wildest dreams of the time.
I celebrate the existence of what Intel provides. I don't want to be exploited and I will not be running blindly into the light but the cynicism is not in me.

Going from getting a frog across a road to pumping lead into people on the battlefield from around the globe to being scared ****less in a VR experience, amazing! Not every bit of tech is a leap forward but generally always in the right direction to giving us a better experience be it games, benchmarking or number crunching. Kaby will be a pointless upgrade for some but great for others. I cant wait to slap a pot on it and watch the LN2 bubble as the frequency soars, how times have changed. The horse is just evolving and that takes a little time.

Us oldies can appreciate what is what and what was bud. Good post!

You are insreasingly, Oh dear every post you make.............. no the selling point is it works well together 24-7 with good performance. We sold 4.5ghz Skylake buindles at over two per day for the entire duration of Skylake simply because it works..... and is very easy to set up.

I mean if you want 5.4ghz at low volts I can do that too if you pay 2K per CPU............................... This bundle is aimed at everyone not the absolute pinnacle.

This thread might as well be closed now.

Why?? Threads like this are to answer customers comments.

We sold many of these already.

Bit boke inducing guys :p

Is it not understandable that Kaby is expensive enough, without adding a premium to what could be considered fairly generic overclocking samples? If 90% of those who buy the chips on their own can do this, what is the point in paying a premium for one bundled with a bunch of other hardware?

Most would like to see binned CPU's sold separately. Caseking offer this, why not OCUK too?

It has no premium on 4.8 bundle we are also providing the testing and OC guide, Bios for free. its just known parts that work well for us and should for the customer no hastles.

The premium is on 5ghz - 5.2+ ghz parts that have delid etc.

We may well offer pre binned only CPU's later in Kaby product life but at the end of the day the CPU will need an MB etc so the bundle is not a bad place for any end user to start then no compatibilty issues with memory or issues reaching a certain performance level. I mean a pre binned CPU on its own will command a high premium for 5.2ghz plus so......... binning costs.

......

I feel positively humbled by OC's sales team who can sell a 5GHz chip at such a premium over a 4.8GHz chip. No real world difference but I guess epeen doesn't come cheap.

Seriously though given how well these chips over clocked I am amazed there is such a market for the binned chips (which there clearly is).

The thing is, enthusiasts who will pay a premium for a premium binned CPU don't necessarily want to buy an out of the box solution. Customising and tweaking everything is what makes system building fun. I would assume those looking to buy a 5.2GHz+ CPU specifically, aren't just casual users. Perhaps you'll have one or two who have come into inheritance money and budget is no issue, but I'd find it hard to believe this is the main target market.

Would prob be fair to assume those interested in these CPU's specifically, are savvy enough to determine compatibility themselves.

Compatibility guidelines without any fixed guarantee users will reach the same clock, would be enough for the majority in regards to the top chips (5.2GHz+)

Question: Can you guys guarantee the (4.8GHz) CPU's (OEM i'm assuming) in these bundles haven't been tested to prove they're not suited to higher clock speeds? If someone was to buy one of these bundles and upgrade the cooler at a later date for example, what chance would they have at reaching a higher clock speed? The same chance as buying a new one separately?

Would the done thing not be to sell off the known lower binned chips at a small discount and be transparent about doing so, knowing the sales of the top binned CPU's will more than compensate for any financial loss? From an overclocking point of view (I know not everyone cares that much about it) but you're effectively paying full price for a guaranteed losing ticket to the silicon lottery.
