OcUK Captains Log - The Great Pirate Hunt

If we carry on the way we've been going, we should break into the top 100 teams on total credit in a 2 or 3 days.:D:D

I feel like I'm rowing the long boat compared to some mighty galleons & frigates captained by the serious squad.
overtake stats
We can regain lost ground quite quickly:D
Don't forget to splice the mainbrace:) Cheers me hearties

How long are people thinking of keeping this Rosetta stuff up? I'll probably go wherever everyone else does. I got the sense that F@H was at the technological forefront, and tinkering with it could be fun - but Rosetta is a worthy project too, and not having to prod SMP clients and virtual machines every day to keep the points flowing is proving quite a relief!

I think some of the F@h high-rollers (me, magman, Bigstan) feel we've reached the top and had to stop, so will be sticking with Rosetta for maybe a few months. I'm not planning on quitting F@h completely as I do feel it's the more focused, but it's also by a very long way the most resourced, particularly with GPU and PS3, not to mention SMP. Hopefully some OcUK'ers will be able to step up and fill the gap in F@h. Given the way the GPU client is going that's looking likely.

Yeah, that's pretty understandable. The momentum does seem to be moving in the direction of Rosetta (and it's so damn easy to set up and run compared to F@H!)

The night that the good ship OcUK DC was spurred into a change of direction by a bunch of pirates must go down as one of the more interesting events in the history of the DC forum :D

(edit) There's just one niggle I have with BOINC projects in general. When everyone was on SETI and it migrated to BOINC, the activity in this forum came to a virtual standstill. In a way, I think it was because the new SETI was too easy - just set it and forget it. So whatever you all decide to do, keep the posts coming, as it'd be a shame to see this community decline!

Need to figure out the Rosetta weekly news thread.

I guess I need to make enquiries with TheTross to find out how he does the SETI news. That might spur me into automating both. :)

Automation? Where's the fun in that? :p :D

More news threads are always good - whatever people decide to do I'll keep the F@H news flowing, may also switch my old X2 over to Rosetta as it can only do standard WUs in F@H since it's turned not on at night by the other half :o
Don't worry though I'll be making sure to make up that lost output by sorting out some more suitable clients/clocks/GPU for my quad :D

I don't think I've ever been top of the flops before, so yay Rosetta as far as I am concerned :p

Just cracked 2K RAC too so .. wahoo!

But I think I'll stick with it for a while, diverting resources where required to fight off challengers, unfortunately however I may end up like the good ship OcUk herself and spread myself too thin (ooer!)

well, actually, i've been thinking that actually, all BOINC projects combined, OcUK ain't doing so well,
http://boincstats.com/stats/boinc_team_graph.php?pr=bo&id=1
we're 23rd overall in the world, and world position RAC is continuing to decline....a sad state from:
Highest World position ever 1 at 2004-08-23

No need to think too hard, we lost our "huge" producers who were some anonymous datacenter managers who punched out huge RAC's in Seti@classic, and then everyone went into a blue funk and threw their toys out of the pram because boinc didn't let them stash and dump. Plus finding aliens is SO LAST MILLENIA :p

So they went and put their CPU cycles into Folding@Home where of course you can stash and dump (oh.. hang on..) but it makes you feel good and is eminently more practical than looking for little green men.

Except some of us swap back and forth between both :) (and Rosetta now)

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Sneezy and Serendipity... didn't they post about once, despite producing more WUs than just about the rest of the world put together?

I 've got WU due 13th so will continue to end of month I guess, to see how far into the top 100 of the team I can get. What is frustrating is that claimed credit & that granted can be wildly different. Often a 1/3 or 1/2 discount. Haven't figure out why - it's not related to the number of attempts & decoys. SETI is better in that respect esp. since I discover the optimised client.

@Berserker - do you maintain the TeamOcUK stats? You mentioned about uploading old data - in expection of getting Rosetta up to date?!

Yup. I maintain old data for a couple of projects not on Team OcUK, and Rosetta happens to be one of those, so with the team interest it seemed like a good idea. I just hope my ISP doesn't moan at me for the upload.

Well I'm back from Wales now, blistered, sore and tired. Good to see we clobbered them pirates over the head while I was gone. My 614 RAC isn't too shabby.

I might leave the Q6600 on Rosetta for the time being, as a new GPU will cover the F@H folding.
