OcUK Dadsnet thread

Depends what you invest in. I chose a Vanguard All World fund and the last 12 months gains were wiped out over the last few weeks, resulting in a loss of about 50 quid at the moment. But it is time in the market versus timing the market.

Yup same here, I've got for the global equity accumulation.. Already down after the past few months but considering money is going to be working over 15 years you'd hope it will end in the positive!

Eldest is due a new car seat and looking for group 2/3.

Have found this which seems to be well reviewed across the board (hundreds of good user reviews only, averages like 4.8 everywhere), but almost too good on value

Joie Baby Trillo Group 2/3 High Back Booster Car Seat, Ember (johnlewis.com)

Mrs. is all but putting her foot down saying it can't be the safest and won't last as long as we need (potentially 8 years just for first kid let alone the rest).

All the alternatives are well above 100, which on the one hand makes it even more of a bargain, but on the other makes it more suspicious? I sort of wish it was 80 instead!

Any thoughts of or experience with this model?

That's all we've got (think we have the older version). Imo a lot of car seats are overpriced, bit like some prams. There got to meet a certain standard to be sold in this country imo, and as long as that is met I'll go cheapest. Isofix not really needed, unless you're changing seats a lot or can't do simple things like click a seat belt in. Backed boosters generally are a lot cheaper than smaller seats as there's just less to them, there's usually no harness, and it's literally a booster with a guide for the seat belt, why should they cost a fortune. I'd hazard a guess that the type of driver/car makes more difference to the safety of a child in a crash than the car seat, unless the expensive ones have airbags:cry:.

Our car seat was expensive but it lasts all the way 0-4 years so seemed worth it. Though I will say I don't really rate ISO-fix... Depending on the car there can be a surprising and worrying amount of play in it, and it's often rattly and disconcerting.

Definitely not going anywhere though i.e. it's not going to detach or anything but yeah, I've looked up countless guides thinking maybe I was just fitting it wrong but don't think I am. Plus we've had it in hire cars and sometimes it's far less wobbly (must be to do with the exact shape of the car's seats or something)

Can't help with that but we are looking at some Scandinavian rear facing approved seats, apparently their crash tests etc are far far more stringent than ours are, thy cost a fortune and are bloody big seats, but what price do you put on the safety.of the little one.

Can't help on seats anymore but one thing if any of your travel a lot, use the car seat holder as an extra suitcase - we often added bulky items in there we wanted to take with us. It's free - only inconvenience is that it has to go in oversize baggage. We did it for 5+ years and it was a great way of getting around luggage charges! :D

Car seats are expensive - especially the well engineered ones that are easy to secure, remove and last for up until they're over 18 kg. We kept ours rear facing as long as possible as it is the safest way to travel, but they're often more bulky. Personally I accepted that I'd rather have a more bulky one for the younger years that was more expensive, and then sell it on, and get a more suitable one for front facing. I know it's probably not good value for money - but I wanted to get a top rated rear facing seat that didn't compromise safety or features just to be front facing / vice versa.

Ultimately there's no right or wrong, they all have to pass a standard and rating, it also has to fit in your car. We got trough at least 6 seats between 2 children, and have 2 spare for grandparents (that live in the UK).

I looked into the junior savings route but knowing it would he theirs when they turn 18 just put me off. I want to give it them when I know they won't blow it all on something stupid. So I just opened a regular stocks and shares isa when born and pop their child benefit into it every month. 3 years now and growing nicely, despite a small dip over the covid hit.

Had a hell of a scare last night. Got a call from my wife "we're at the hospital and I need you to pay the parking on the app, Riley had a bad accident at gymnastics. I'll call you later". I knew she just needed to crack on and not have me ringing her for more details, but was a rough hour wondering what the hell had happened.

Turned out she was standing on this 4ft platform to jump onto the asymmetric bars, decided she didn't need to wait for the trainer and jumped on her own and slipped on the out swing, falling 6 feet or so. She walked over to my wife and collapsed with her eyes rolled into the back of her head and started twitching. So yeah, rather terrifying for my wife and I'm glad I don't have that memory.

Docs gave her a good once over and she's fine, with the only lasting trauma being with my wife and I.

Bloody hell having kids is bad for your mental health!

Glad to know she's alright! However reading this has now made me even more nervous with kids and heights , time to wrap her up in bubble wrap lol

Holy ****. Glad she's ok.

But yes kids make you a nervous wreck. Hope she gets back to it and doesn't let this phase her.

The most important is that they learn the different sounds of the language as a baby, as that cannot be learned later on. They can pick up everything else over a longer period of time if necessary/interested.

Mine keeps singing Disney songs in the foreign language as they've never heard the local language versions. It confuses the people at the crèche :D

Yeah that immersion or familiarisation at baby age is key as you say. I'm working on getting a VPN set up on the TV for the shows to be in frog. That said the fact that even my youngest understands everything I say is heart warming enough.

Let it go in French is somewhat different! :D

Has anyone taken a 5 month old to a music festival? We would be staying in a hotel that's walking distance from the venue. The venue has a family tent with baby changing etc facilities.

How time flies, just chosen our sons school. I don't know where that 4 years has gone.
Found the perfect school so will be great seeing him go there this year.

Congrats! Always nervous waiting to see which schools you get into. I found it emotional (in a good way,) but also very liberating. Our eldest although very independent and confident has come on leaps and bounds.

Has he been going to preschool? Or nursery? How did he enjoy that? How do you feel about it?

Do you have any other kids? As around here siblings ar guaranteed a place in the same school.

He's at nursery 2 days a week at the minute and enjoys it with his friends.

He's guaranteed the school we pick so no worrying about that and his sister who is just 1 now will go to the nursery at his school when she gets the free hours. She'll get priority at that school then as well.
It's one of the closest schools, but also we felt perfectly suited to him. They seem very much like his current nursery and very family/community oriented.
When we visited all the children behaved how we want ours to behave and all seemed very happy.

He came on great when started nursery so we expect the same for school.

Sounds ace! Even better that it's close-by! Look forward to hearing how he gets on in September (it'll be here before you know it!). :)

Are there any of his friends going to the same school?

I don't think so, we live right on a boundary so the school is actually in the other area. Going to be a logistical nightmare with all his assistants and caregivers, they'll all have to coordinate across but like the head teacher said to us, that's their issue not ours.
She was a lovely head, worked they're for many years ago the staff let into her all the children said hello to her, she knew all the children's names which was great to see.

Had about a week of screaming through the night due to teething, followed by last night/this morning our 17 month old just deciding she doesn’t want to sleep, and throwing a ****-fit every time we tried to put her down, meaning neither me or my wife have slept for about a week now.

No point to this post other than to vent really, I just hope this gets better soon.
