OcUK Dadsnet thread

Thank you Chris, much appreciate it.
Yeah will look at the NCT classes I know people at work and my sister spoke very highly of them to meet new faces etc. Probably good to share experience/advice as well as on here too.
Also, take lots of photos, each and every day. They change so quickly. With todays digital world you'll come to regret it if you don't.

wife wanted to both NCT classes. the paid one and the free one. We're still in contact with all of the people from the paid one, but not from the other course. in the end most people didnt even turn up for the free one

NCT was great for us but you're not always guaranteed a good group. We had 8 couples in our and still see three of them quite often. The others were all very odd people lol.

Our first didn't arrive until I was 39 and our 2nd made her appearance when I was 42. I'm now 44 and have a 4yo and a 2yo. It is certainly testing on the tiredness front!
Similar age to me - we had them "late" as well - we have 2 kids under 6. Makes me glad I'm a bit of health/fitness bore, as I don't think I'd be able to cope. Makes me think whether it would have been better to have them earlier, but actually I'm glad we waited as career wise, and maturity wise I feel much more confident in bringing up kids than I would have done 10 years ago.

Same here. Hoping at least one of my girls gets into fitness and hopefully cycling so we can head out together! Like you I follow a pretty healthy / active lifestyle. Whilst the balance has changed a fair bit and I'm not off every weekend on long rides nor am I in the gym as much I'm still doing enough, just.

Due to having to maintain the family/work/exercise balance I'm up rather early at least 4 days a week. Tomorrow I'll be up at just gone 4am to cycle to work, do a 1/2 hour interval session on the wattbike and shower before I start work at 6. It's not so bad if the children sleep through just now and then i get a night when all I get is broken sleep.

Ah it's all downhill from here, the kids will require more and more time from you and you will have less and less time to do your things as well as less energy. Fair play for staying positive though ;)

Yeah I squeeze it in when I can. My wife is a hero and lets me have an hour in the gym most days as she knows it does me a world of good.

If I go to work I end up walking a fair bit which isn't bad. Weekends I spend most of my time chasing the kids, going to parks and swimming so the exercise is there, but as you say it's different. You just have to make it work. Early riser here too but fortunately we've had very little issues with sleep, certainly now that they're at school they're knackered by the time they get home.

My kids call me the friendly hulk! :D my eldest does taekwondo and seems to be loving it. So I hope she keeps it up. Hoping my youngest will enjoy it or rugby. Though both love swimming so that's always good!

We haven't cracked cycling yet. Next on the list.

Though they love coming to the gym with me (my gym not a commercial gym). I could do with a spotter :D

Taking my son to a 3rd birthday party at the weekend, haven't been to one for years and literally won't know anyone there as my wife does nearly all the nursery drop-off/pick-up (was a bit different with my older son, back then I at least knew a few other parents). As someone in their 40s with greying hair I wonder what the chances of being mistaken for a grandparent are!

I really want to take the kids cycling, but to actually go somewhere rather than just cycle where we are is difficult. For starters I'd have to get a roof rake/bike rack, and it would have to take 4 bikes which seems uncommon. We've slmost cracked my son cycling on his own, but it's hard work (think we left it too long).

Cycling, get a scoot bike, don't bother with stabilisers on first bike.

Top advice. My eldest had a Puki balance bike and I got her to the point where she'd build up lots of speed then roll along balancing. Bought her a 2nd hand Isla bike for her 4th Birthday. She got on it, I helped her to get moving the first few times but once moving she just rode unaided. I was quite happy about that, I thought it was going to require me to do a lit of running / supporting.

Pretty normal to see older parents around our way.

Yup, both ours had scoot bikes(boys one went to daughter with additional girl decals and streamers ), then straight onto a normal bike, little bit of practice/get used to pedals were away. :)

I was 43 and 45 when my children were born. I'm 47 in November and do have the odd thought about being an older dad. However, I don't really care and I look great for my age lol.

The only thing that bothers me, which I have no control over, is statistically I won't have as much time with my kids as a younger father should.

We had our son later in life when I was 42, didn't think it was much of a big deal, but the other half didn't appreciate being called a geriatric mother .

However, when I picked my lad up from nursey one day another kid asked him "is that your granddad?". The lass running the nursey didn't know where to look but I knew she was smirking :D.
