yes.

if something gets stolen (or reported stolen) you may be the only suspect.

A quick warning to everyone on the server - I do check through the logs pretty frequently. If I start to find multiple examples of bad behaviour I will ban the people in question without hesitating.

Lucky thing you don't record the ventrilo conversation logs then....... oh the naughty ideas we had while taking a gander at lukes creation last night :p (all in humour i should add....we wouldn't actually do anything lol, but his nice glass roof and the idea of a tnt canon came up..........)

The way I see it is, if the chest is in a place that you can get to it and it is not locked then it is OK to look, but not steal. If a place is built with the design to keep people out (like my castle has a BIG wall with no entrance for anyone but me) then I expect people to stay out and not destroy blocks (even if they repair after) to get in or build stacks of dirt to get over the wall. Just like real life it can be quite obvious when something is built with the intent to keep people out, and I just wish people would respect that in minecraft.

But when we come to check the logs after a reported theft we can't tell if you just looked i na chest or if you took something.

So say the owner of the chest is a bit of a ****, he checks it and notices you've looked inside, he then removes his diamonds and says wtf all my diamonds are gone, we check logs only you and him have accessed it, you get blamed.
 
The simple solution is to lock your chests. You can also lock furnaces so missing coal/mats needn't be a problem either... signs aren't exactly 'expensive'.
 
Anyone else making tracks? really tempted to see if I can join up to someone else's from my house although I'm guessing the distance will be huge! Now I've had my slaves install an underwater tunnel it should be possible :)

If people don't lock their chests then they shouldn't come crying when something gets taken. I'm not saying that people should just go steal from unlocked chests but if a chest is not locked then the owner of the chest is partially at fault. In the situation you mentioned, the other person who was just curious may get blamed but he shouldn't get punished as there is no evidence he took anything and the owner made the choice to not protect the chest.
 
I don't think anyone should be punished for removing items from unlocked chests. It should be accepted that these are public and for public use regardless of where there are, this is a private members server after all and we all help each other out. Granted I'd check with the owner of the house closest if I wanted to take something first, but we should be locking the important stuff away.

I have 3 double chests in my house which I've sign posted specifically to get people to empty them if they want the stuff in them. Everything I want to keep is locked away, it only takes a couple of seconds to set a lock - then you can forget about it!

I've taken a crap load of that cobblestone from your double chests so you can have some of the tracks that I made. :)
