OcUK Photo Comp - Season Five : Round Seven - "Candid" DISCUSSION

I have my entry up. I shot this yesterday (04th October). I was sitting outside a cafe waiting for a bus with my mate when I spotted these to fellas. This candid photography is hard. Any comments on the image?

This shot is too old for the competition, but I just wondered if anyone thought it was candid?

Randomly looking at photo.net, i say these are what i call Candids. Ok, i doubt we'll see anything like these in the competition but you get the idea of what I mean anyway. Each photo tells you what that person is doing at that moment, may be even that day, its a snap shot of a second in their life captured on film. That's the best way i can describe it.

well the last image would fail on the ######## border rule :D

Speaking of rules, you've been here long enough to know that you should fully star out swear words :p

This is an interesting round. Its something thats been bouncing around my head for a while. I know quite a few professional photographers who take good photos because they are great people first and good photographers second. This round is basically a test of that concept. Can you get close enough to some strangers to get a good shot? Sure you could sit 400mm away and compose a shot but thats not really in the spirit of this type of photography. Just think for a second about people like Cartier-Bresson who used a 50mm lens. Imagine how close he must have been. Its a test of you as a person not you as a photographer. I must admit I was walking through town the other day and I did have my camera but I was too scared to point it at anyone. Thats something I know I have to beat as I could be missing out on some great shots. I HATE to miss a shot. So the only option is to face my fear, beat it and get great shots. I need to be a great people person first and a great photographer second. I think thats really the key.

Same with me, although I don't mind approaching people to take their photographs all that much as long as they are elder people, I find it a lot harder approaching people my age, becuase I think, *FEAR* rather, that they might get the impression I'm trying to hit on them or something ridiculous.

The Key? Or the cyKey? :p

Thats kinda strange as I was out recently doing a street fashion shoot and young people jumped at the chance, for the most part. There was that one girl who ran off screaming into a shop. None of the old people wanted to join in which was a shame as they looked great.

The Key? Or the cyKey? :p
