OcUK Photo Comp - Season Five : Round Seven - "Candid" DISCUSSION

I was wondering would the below picture be described as candid? I wasnt thinking about entering as i could never compete as i only got my 350D mid august.

Took this at a family wedding while sipping sangria and am really proud of it for some reason!

Its a nice pic but it looks a little out of focus to me, not too sure how the judges will rate it on theme

cykey - Noooooooooooooooooooooo, you should never give that away ! Techniques are ok but not the rest, same as you never show people your bad shots. They'll start you think every photo you take is painted by Michael Angelo. :D

Mystery is half what a Candid shot is, people think what they want to think because it is the story that makes it. And there is nothing better than a person's imagination when it comes to mystery. Just like a good horry movie, it's not what you see, but its what you don't see. The monster is never as scarey once you've seen its face.

So true :) I think I'll edit my post and save it till after then ;) Thats why I chose that shot, to add mystery. I wonder how many read my original post ;)

I have to agree with what's been said. As great as cyKey's shot is (and it really is a great shot) it doesn't look like a candid, it looks like a portrait (as does rG-Tom's, which needs a bit of LHS cropping off it :D)

Is that a candid in that the guy quickly snapped the girl as she was staring out the window or is it someones girl friend and he said to look pensive?

Does it matter? Whether it's staged or not, it looks like a candid. There's a story there, she's been stood up, or found lipstick on her hubbies collar, or granny's died ... or something.

Yeah it does. Its not real otherwise. Its not a candid capture of a real moment in someones life, its just "Look over there and think about whether you left the oven on." I see what Raymond was saying. Knowing too much sucks the possability out of it, that little bit of magic that makes it more than just a photo.

To me, candid means that the person being photographed was either not aware of it.

I think we need clarification from the judges views becuase that is what matters in this comp...

Actually, that's exactly what we don't need and is why we have the rule:-

* The Judges may not discuss or submit their interpretation of the theme until the competition winner has been announced.

However, judges should be open minded into peoples interpretations of the theme. I tended to give people higher theme scores if they thought of something I didn't for a theme (i.e. more original).

Personally I think that's pretty dumb. There is obviously a deboccle going on here about what "candid photography" actually is. So the judges interpretation is really important otherwise someone could take the best shot of what they think candid is, as well as others agreeing it's candid and score so low becuase the judges dont agree. Where as they could have had another photo taken that they could have replaced their entry with that they didn't like but what the judges might of thought was more "candid".

Anyway I'm babbling and not making much sense, it all makes sense in my head though :p

candid in my mind means capturing someone having a personal moment, and the moment is personal because the person isn't aware of their surroundings, and certainly not the photographer

anyone agree?

What you've said is as broad as it is wide, but I totally agree :D

But what if I, Rich and Matt all have different opinions on what makes a photograph candid?

Besides, the theme is an entirely subjective matter. Interpret it how you want to.

Ah yer, I just remembered what you're meant to do.

Tell the judges what your interpretation is, so they are at least aware of it. This might help them to understand your photo when you enter it. :)

I think the point of any of these competitions is that they are open to the opinion of the judges and in many cases our views may differ with theirs. I fyou have an issue with this, then best not enter! Treat it simply as motivation to get out there and try and take better pics in what you interpret as the theme of the comp. It is entirely useless and pointless to try to "win" these comps.

But then your shot is more about pleasing a set of judges than it is about the theme of candid photography. We don't get to know anything about the judges when entering one for Practical Photography or anything like that. Its simply about the photography, it always has been and always should be.

When I think "candid" the first thing that comes to mind is "unposed". If your subect is too aware of the camera or has been asked to pose for a photograph then it is a portrait.

All in my humple opion of course.

Anywa, i've been pretty quiet here for most of 2006 so I thought i'd enter my first photo of the season on what (to me) is the most challenging of themes.

Any crit would, as usual be very much appreciated.

Nice image!

It's one of the best posted so far imo. The only problem is YOUR BORDER IS 2 COLOURS (well shades, but you get the point)!!!

Mine?

As far as I can see it isn't. 1cm black border done in Photoshop.

Aaah...right. I see what's happened. I forgot to sharpen the image before the border was added so i sharpened after...giving a weird double border effect. Will change that now.

Hmmm weird. I'm sure I can see a maybe 1 pixel lighter grey running around the inside of the border?
