OcUK RX7900 series review thread

So you are playing a specific game in a specific scenario and apparently you are wondering why AMD aren't catering to you?

I hope you realise why Game devs treat PC gamers 2nd rate right?

I don't need AMD to "cater" to me.

Their representation of the 6800XT was pretty accurate. My 6800XT performed as expected because their RDNA2 launch was not misleading. -Not because they designed RDNA2 for "old games".

"Catering" to me? I was happy when they were simply not lying to me.

Insinuating that we failed to read / understand "up to" in the charts.

AMD's pre-launch charts over the last few years have reasonably conveyed the general performance we could expect to see in the wild. Sure, they would throw some cherry-picked metrics in the same chart with lower, more typical numbers, but we got a reasonable range from their presentations. This time they went straight cherry-picking to mislead us. (And their investors)

*That* is where the question originated.

"Up to" he says. No **** Frank. You guys threw your credibility out the window and I doubt it will have been worth it.

Even if you look at the 3 games in AMD's chart and compare to HU's results you get this :

----------------------6950XT--------------7900XTX-----------Performance gain
COD:MW....................88 .........................120.......................1.36
WD:L.........................86...........................108......................1.25
CB 2077.....................49............................70.......................1.42

That is absolutely nowhere near what AMD claimed or it is skewed heavily by the type of scenes used by AMD and by HU. It looks like HU is more accurate and the 7900XTX is only achieving around 35% more performance than the 6950XT based on these 3 games alone.

Lots of fine whining on here today.

I’m not sure I share the sentiment towards the 7900xtx. It’s a great card with a lot of potential. Also great that people are getting some high clocks on these. I’m looking forward to mine next month.

The real issue here is their credibility. (Or lack thereof)

That had built it up over the past few years, and now they have torn it down with this launch.
Like I said there is a known issue with their drivers which is causing the card to underperform on some games. If you take large averages or just look at those games you see the scores come in lower. The AMD expert on reddit that helped debunk the A0 thing also mentioned this was happening. They clearly had a deadline to release the card and could only get these drivers out for that time.

They knew what the performance was and they misrepresented it.

Deadlines, driver issues, dog eating their homework....I don't care. Don't tell me it's a 55% uplift when it's 35%.

Has someone sat down and compared the exact same setups and testing conditions?

I would see what the drivers bring in the new year. They are working on them over the holidays due to these exact issues.

None of this ******** was required for RDNA2's release. We didn't have to call in a team of attorneys with magnifying glasses to read the fine print and decrypt the marketing.

We looked at the charts AMD presented, and we got what was expected.

Now AMD is like: "Haha, should have read the fine print, suckers!"

Exactly this, same with every Ryzen launch, it was as AMD presented or better. years of doing that earned them trust and good will.

That's what make this so egregious, because up until this point you could trust AMD's slides, and so we did.

Now, instead of just coming clean and saying "ok its not what we expected it to be, we are working on it" you have one of AMD's executives on twitter treating people like they are idiots, what is it with these companies? Do they hire people who advise them the general population are thick? Because they all seem to get to this point eventually.

Someone upgraded his 3080 for SC. His CPU is a 5900X @ 4.4Ghz, 4000MT/s RAM.

Tested on: 3.17.4 Live

Average FPS's with:
  • RTX 3080 Gigabyte Vision OC:
  1. New Babbage in-city: ~40 FPS
  2. New Babbage spaceport lift off: ~30 FPS
  3. Microtech planet side: ~60 FPS
  4. Space: ~80 FPS

  • XFX 7900 XTX:
  1. New Babbage in-city: ~50 FPS
  2. New Babbage spaceport lift off: ~45 FPS
  3. Microtech planet side: ~70 FPS
  4. Space: ~90 FPS

In space is neither here nor there, i have seen it as high as 130 FPS if you're in the deep black.

New Babbage is a good place to test, its very hard on the GPU, especially with the Volumetric clouds on, which takes your GPU, wraps its hands around its neck and squeezes as hard as it can, its also pretty consistent because unlike a lot of the other cities on other planets it doesn't change much and the time of day doesn't have any effect on performance.

Thought i would give my 2070 Super a comparison.

I normally have the clouds off in game because my GPU can't handle them, but i turned them on for this.

Coming out of the Space Port Hanger (Space Port Lift off) between 23 and 25 FPS.
Flying across the ice lake 20 to 30 FPS.

"Microtech planet side" i guess he's just flying around the planet, i didn't do that, i had a walk around one of the city area's, 25 to 50.

1440P highest settings.

I do sometimes forgot I have a ship in this game and haven't tried it out in ages... 1440p is what I'd play it at...
the rain and outside effects looked kinda bad for such high quality settin

seems like a better gpu is gonna be required for it.

Its supposed to be snow :D

Weather effects come and go but they turned the particle effects right down because people complained they couldn't see, people like to use MicroTech for war games, but then complain they can't see because of the weather effects....

I don't envy radeon users.

I'm 3 minutes in and....

"With Nvidia you get liner overclocking performance, 10% gain you 10% performance"
Tell that to my Nvidia GPU wich with a 15% overclock core and 10% on the VRam only nets me 6% performance.

"you have to use the AMD software for overclocking"
Tell that to TPU who didn't use the AMD software, they used MSI Afterburner because they get better results with it.

With that i can guess the rest of this video....
