[OcUK Staff Builds] rjkoneill's TJ07

Nice build mate, but how do all you people seem to get CAD images of motherboards etc... is there some trick I'm missing out on, because making that board on a CAD suite would be pretty time consuming and probably not worth it

I'm loving the UD7 board mate, clocks very nicely and is working better than my old P6T6 WS Revolution. Haven't gone for watercooling on the board this time, quad rad for CPU only instead :D

Like the colour scheme as well, first time in a while Gigabyte made a good looking board in my opinion!

im a big fan of the ud7, the gigabyte X58a range is quite poor at the moment. i dont even want to go into detail about the UD3r rev2
but the ud7 stands out as a consistantly excellent board. OcUK gets fantastic support from gigabyte and thats part of the reason that i decided t make the move.

plus, the rampage III is still very dissapointing in my book. it has nothing that makes it worth the extra money over a REXII.

i have considered EVGA, but i despise their bioses and dont think i could use it for my own system

the google skethup images were readily available. you just download sketchup and type what you want into the search engine.
i typed 'TJ07' 'thermochill' 'corsair' 'rampage extreme' and it came up with everything i needed. hope that helps :)

Would prefer to see the MSI Big Bang Xpower if I'm honest, but a UD7 will do I suppose..... :p

Didn't you only just get a replacement Rampage 2 for it RJK? Lots of spare money. :D

i considered that board too but it doesnt have any readily available blocks for it. the UD7 blocks will make the tubing routing nice too.

i have only just had a new rampage II but that was an RMA replacement for my original. its actually a slightly better clocker than the first one i had.

What do you think to the Rev 2 of the UD7? Seems like a bit of a step backward in design as they have cut some power phases and removed the waterblock from the setup (which although a lot of people won't use, may be a selling point for some - few people on XS use it)

the rev 2 is a bit hit and miss imho

like you say, they have cut it down a bit. it would only be worth having if the price is cut to reflect the missing features
whilst i think the waterblock on the giga extreme boards are pap, it is a nice touch that many other manufacturers dont even offer.

[i will of course be slamming a lovely little EK number on mine ;)]

last time gigabyte were in i gave them a list of stuff they need to include on their extreme boards to make them more desirable. they have took notes!

of course i cant really comment on the boards performance until we get a sample
but we do have a new budget gigabyte board incoming which i am very interested in. not for myself ofc.

sorry for the poor quality pics

Looks good & should perform even better :)

:D I want to upgrade to that board but I'll never get around to it though lol :D mobo, mem, cpu too costly to get all at once for me especially when I only choose good parts & don't fancy ordering part by part incase theres a problem with 1 of the components when I eventually put it all together, oh well my rig aint too shabby :).

I'm fed up with IDE. My new gigabyte board came with a floppy socket too.....

Just brings the looks like tbh.

Looking forward to seeing this built RJK. Will you be sticking with just the one GTX480?

rj: if you're handy with a camera, why not submit to million dollar pc?

Iirc it's an invite only thing. My 'tiger style' build got an invite but I never got around to taking decent pics of it, just the vid. They have 'reps' who scour the net for top builds. IF you really want to get noticed and enhance your e-peen then XS is perhaps the best place as it is multinational.;)

Love the new blocks Rich :)

Good work Rich but it a pity with annoying unwanted IDE on the board!

agree with that chaps, i expressed my annoyance at gigabyte last time they came to visit me. in fairness they all get their little notepads out every time a suggestion is made.

i wont be going dual GPU, one 480 is more than enough for now. i might get some shiney blocks on it soon though :D

thanks & spot on w3bbo, it is invite only and from what i gather, Nils [dualbrain] has the final say on what goes on that site.
you have to be 'voted for'
in all fairness, whilst i do take pride in my own system i doubt that i could build/photograph to mdpc standard. i think MDPC are looking for different and unique builds. and whilst i check all of the boxes when it comes to presentation and high end hardware, when it boils down to it my system is 'Just another TJ07'
the only reason i like doing project logs is to showcase cool hardware and discuss ideas. its always interesting to read constructive input

im trying to get the boss to agree to a project logs & modding section as a sub forum in Case Central. this way all the user worklogs will be found in one place. its somethign a lot of forum members have been asking about for a while

thanks for the comments guys :)

Hehe, XS is apparently too extreme for me or at least thats how it felt when I tried signing up a while ago, wanted a little help on overclocking, got no activate account response for 2 weeks then they didn't allow my email address saying it was a free email lol their loss so I show up here, tbcs & bit-tech & forgot about XS :D.

Oooh, I like that idea , keep pushing :D.

I like the idea of that tbh. Maybe a project log/modding section all by itself as the case section is a little ambiguous? There are some cracking build logs at the moment but a lot are getting missed because of questions regarding cases. A project is a lot more than just building a standard PC, a true project involves modding and using a bit(lots) of innitiative and innovation, not just using standard parts and plugging them in as anyone with an ounce of experience in building PC's can do that.

I do like MDPC, the builds on there are top notch and are renown for being the pinnacle of PC design but for my tastes there are just too many 'same old same old' eg tj-07 (no offence) or lian-li v2000 etc. Nothing wrong with that I guess but each case looks like an evolution of the last which while they look pretty, bore the pants of me!

Totally agree with that. I'm not fussed whether I have the most up to date PC as those parts can be changed, updated when required. I do my logs as more of a guide of what can be done so others who are new to the game have something to aspire to as I know how frightening it is when people first dip their toes into the world of PC watercooling. I tend to learn stuff myself when building PC's too, in fact I can't remember a build I havn't learnt something from. i.e

Project UFO - My first dual loop PC
Tiger Style - Free hand painting in UV is a pita but done tastefully can give great results!
Black Ice - If you like black then everything is catered for and easy to obtain any parts you want. Also learnt a bit about laser cutting. Lian LI's are flimsy though and imo do not stand the test of time if you are constantly changing parts!
Project Angel - Patience is required!!! Braiding for this pc has been the lesson learnt along with thoroughly testing components before installing them (n00b error on my part!).

Im beginning to think this rig is not ment to be used, only to be dismantled and rebuilt :p.

Definatly loving the black/white looks. Much nicer and more practical than builds with lots of bright lights and UV things.

made a couple of minor changes this week

sold my 480 blocks off to someone and got the nickel plexi version so the blocks match my new motherboard

got NathWraith to order me one of these beauties too

WC-080-EK_400.jpg

looking at a few performance upgrades too but i need to do some more testing and research.

the front of the case is going to soon change a bit too
i am putting the doube thermochill in the front of the case to aid airflow and add some extra cooling to the loop [fermi on a single loop is a very very silly idea]

the front of the case will soon be filled with these lian li bezels
DSC01982.jpg

they should allow for a bit of airflow over the rad.
