Oculus Quest 2 Pro / Oculus Quest 3 Thread

Yea sounds interesting but already owning the quest 2 I'm more interested in a true successor and the psvr 2 next year, personally

Personally I'm more interested in seeing what Sony release as the PS5 should be capable of driving some great visuals and has the CPU/Memory to drive some far more immersive VR content than a mobile chip will be able to handle for a good few years. Plus Sony first party VR titles have in general been some of the best.

That's pretty much my feeling unless the pricing is only £100-200 more than the Quest 2 and I chop my current Quest 2 in against it to cover most of the cost.

Though the biggest challenge with a Quest Pro or 3 is that current games will need updates to support the new resolution/specs. My gut feeling is that Oculus will want to wait until Quest 3 next year before releasing any new headsets so a 'pro' version is unlikely IMO.

We'll I bought a Quest2 bundle yesterday and am having to send it back. Just not good enough for me using the link cable, and I was really looking forward to it :( It was like playing games from 10 years ago. Despite me running the graphics on ultra, and having it set to the max scaling (iirc 1.7x?) it still looked a bit off. Maybe it was just the lenses?

Hopefully the pro will be much better. I'm hearing about a new type of LCD which should lift the image somewhat. Do you think they will have an HDMI in rather than having to encode the image?

To be honest, I'm looking for a better FOV and comfort more than anything else. I found the elite strap pretty crap. Probably the shape of my head, but unless I had it really tight it slipped down my face.

How did you have the vertical strap? And did you try with a battery pack on the back too? Vertical strap is very important, and battery pack (or indeed any weight) at the back is a huge improvement.

Did you try airlink? Not having wires is half the appeal.

Yeah, tried messing with the strap but not adding any weight to the back. Unfortunately it also had two dead pixels, one right in the middle so had to go back anyway. It's a shame as I got the bundle for a great price.
Still, I'll wait to see what the pro offers.

Yeah, dead pixels are unacceptable.

What GPU do you have and what games did you try?

It's just my luck at the minute. The last two monitors I bought had dead pixels and now this :p

My current monitor came with a few stuck pixels, but it's a 32 inch 1440p monitor, and they're at the edges. I don't notice them at all.

However that's very different to a vr headset!

There's a load of different headstraps, it may be you find a halo strap works much better for you.

Yeah maybe, I used to have a psvr which was fine

After switching back and forth between my Quest 2 and Index the Quest's compression artefacts and the small FOV really get to me, more than the more noticable SDE and lower resolution of the Index.

To be fair the fact that you even need to flip flop between the 2 to decide which is your favourite shows just how good the Q2 is...

the index is pretty much the best consumer grade VR headset on the market. It is a PC only device, and costs £1000

the Quest 2 is a £300 device (or £250 if you get the current offer so i am told) its primarily a stand alone device which includes a computer and a battery with it, and is a PCVR device as an extra feature.

I am not downplaying your observations, they are useful, but i think its important to keep in mind what market these devices are aimed at when comparing them.

you could buy 3 quest 2s for the price of 1 index, and still have some cash left over for a couple of games........ and even then the index you cant stuff in a bag and play round your mates house with no other equivpement.

it was a sad day when oculus canned the rift 2... it was by all accounts close to being ready to go as well.

given what oculus can produce for £300, imagine what they could produce for £600, and possibly without the need for onboard compute or battery...........

maybe that will be the quest 2 pro...... There is surely room in the market for a £300 device AND a £600 device from the same company (albeit both with standalone compute unlike a rift headset)

I've made that argument myself many times. I'm in total agreement. I bought the Index when the only other decent PC headset was the Rift S, which at best was a side-grade from my old CV1. It's only later that the Quest and Quest 2 got PC support via link and then wireless.

However I tend to use my Quest 2 mainly for native apps, and Oculus exclusives that don't work well with Revive, and it's great for that.
For PC I'll use the Index because despite the lower resolution it's sharper and the FOV is incredible.

I don't think the Index controllers are massively better than the Quest 2 touch, in fact in some ways they're worse as the grip sensor is finicky and many games don't use it properly. Also the button and stick layout is less ergonomic due to the useless trackpad in the centre.

However, I have had to spend a fair bit of money on the Quest 2 to get it comfortable - Elite battery strap, front and back PU covers, plus external headphones which takes it to about half the cost of an Index, so it's not quite as cheap by comparison.

The only really necessary comfort add-on I've got for the Index are some 3D printed grip boosters to bulk out the controller handles to make them more comfortable for my hands.

I did :D

Just built a gaming rig and fancied trying some racing games on it. I was debating getting a reverb g2 but when I saw the q2 bundle I got that instead.

Sorry just after seeing your post.

What happened your first Quest 2? And what did you think was going to be different? It seems like a very odd thing to do? Surely you knew what the pros and cons of the headset were?

Did you return the Quest 2 yet? Did you change the encode bitrate when you had it setup? It makes a massive difference to PCVR games over the link cable.

I got lucky with my quest 2 on the value front.... it was £276 from argos, i got a free copy of a AAA PCVR game (name eludes me) then oculus sent me a proper VR cover for it due to it irritating my skin (more recently they also sent me the silicon cover)....

as for the head mount i got a chinese special from ebay, it is a knock off of the PSVR head mount, i think it cost maybe £22. and i got a 5m active usb3 cable for............ i think it was £26 so all in all it was a bargain.

I dont have an index, i could not justify it above my rift CV1 at the time, but have bought a Reverb G2. that is a good headset, and for the £500ish that it cost me it is good price for the tech.

i almost always use that for pcvr (it needed the frankenmod to fix the FOV mind you) but even that its not night and day better than my quest.... (a win in some places, a loss in others)

the index and the G2 both have superior sound to the quest, but 1) the sound tubes are not as bad as i was expecting and 2) i must admit i was a little disappointed with the sound of the G2. it is good, but after all the hype etc, i personally dont find it much, if any better than my CV1 sound.

I never had a gaming PC before, and really wanted to get into racing games. Tried all the various settings. Think a new head strap would have gone a long way.

I'm sure cutting off the blood supply to my brain would have caused my eyes to go a bit fuzzy :p

The issue is that despite individual headsets having good features there's no one headset that combines all into a good all-rounder.

The Quest 2 has bad FOV, bad default headstrap, no lossless PC connectivity and awful IPD adjust.
The Index is expensive, lower resolution than recent headsets requires base stations for tracking, and doesn't have wireless.
The G2 has awful controllers and bad controller tracking, and has had cable issues.

We need a headset that mixes all the good parts - relatively cheap, high resolution good FOV, decent IPD adjust, wireless capable, and comfortable out of the box.
