Oculus Quest 2 Pro / Oculus Quest 3 Thread

The issue is that despite individual headsets having good features there's no one headset that combines all into a good all-rounder.

The Quest 2 has bad FOV, bad default headstrap, no lossless PC connectivity and awful IPD adjust.
The Index is expensive, lower resolution than recent headsets requires base stations for tracking, and doesn't have wireless.
The G2 has awful controllers and bad controller tracking, and has had cable issues.

We need a headset that mixes all the good parts - relatively cheap, high resolution good FOV, decent IPD adjust, wireless capable, and comfortable out of the box.

You know, if they made a quest headset with even a little bit better FOV, and added a direct DP port it would be much better.

Personally I'm more interested in seeing what Sony release as the PS5 should be capable of driving some great visuals and has the CPU/Memory to drive some far more immersive VR content than a mobile chip will be able to handle for a good few years. Plus Sony first party VR titles have in general been some of the best.

That's pretty much my feeling unless the pricing is only £100-200 more than the Quest 2 and I chop my current Quest 2 in against it to cover most of the cost.

Though the biggest challenge with a Quest Pro or 3 is that current games will need updates to support the new resolution/specs. My gut feeling is that Oculus will want to wait until Quest 3 next year before releasing any new headsets so a 'pro' version is unlikely IMO.
Yeah owning a psvr as my first headset I have to say I'm impressed with the game output. It's really the hardware holding it back, both the power of the PS4/pro and the headset itself. The software was exceptional and should be allowed to shine with better hardware and more power to drive it.
Can't wait to see a potential Astro Bot 2, sequel to Blood and Truth, Gran Turismo vr and maybe resi evil 8? Definitely a day 1 purchase for me assuming the price is reasonable

I never had a gaming PC before, and really wanted to get into racing games. Tried all the various settings. Think a new head strap would have gone a long way.

I'm sure cutting off the blood supply to my brain would have caused my eyes to go a bit fuzzy :p
For racing sims I use either link cable and the bitrate up some or the Airlink. But the reality is that sims are so demanding that you have to sacrifice image quality for frame rate. After you’ve played them a while, going back to sims via a monitor feels rubbish. Yes it looks better on a monitor, but it looks like it’s on a monitor. VR feels like you are there, albeit with dirty glasses.

I think we are still a few years away from GPU power for sharp detailed visuals in demanding sims in VR.

Yeah, but psvr 2 is only getting it's release date announced in 2022. Quest 2 pro looks like it's coming sooner, given the quest 2 updates already include references to it.
Maybe, but I'm not going to buy 2 headsets in one year....and think the psvr 2 will be more interesting with more innovative games when it does come out (hopefully at the end of 2022 latest)

PSVR 2 will almost definitely have a fantastic library with it. I'm hoping oculus will have some big developments in the pipes by then as well.

My install of Assetto Corsa sacrifices nothing graphically, nor for frame rate. On my G2 @3000*3000 in SteamVR, with AC maxed out, sol installed, FSR max quality and sharpness, it's very much monitor pin sharp.

Holds 90 frames on nearly all tracks with the 15 AI i generally run, it's utterly stunning around nords and the new union island. ACC with the same external settings, Epic VR presets, holds 45 frames looks near monitor quality. Understandably not everybody favours 45 frames, but personally iv'e found WMRs motion vectoring a much better experience than steam own motion smoothing and obviously i'm citing the absolute hardcase scenario with a G2 @150% with Epics.

AMS2 with the same externals, with all important in game visuals set to ultra holds fluid frames and looks monitor quality.

While you're very much entitled to your opinion, my daily experience with the hardware i have yields quite the opposite to your own.

Yeah very true! Honestly nothing against the oculus games, I can't wait for Lone Echo 2 and Resi Evil 4 vr. Lone echo is one of my favorite vr games and most of the current cool games coming out for vr are for the quest and not pc vr. I think owning an oculus headset and psvr 2 will give you the best spread of quality games in the coming years.

Damn!!
With my setup (Quest 2, 3090FE & 5950) it’s still quite a way from being monitor quality in most games and I’ve tweaked and tried everything. It’s good quality and brilliant immersion.
I have been so close lately to pressing the buy button on a Reverb G2 to go alongside my Q2, to just get rid of that bit of compression fuzziness in sims. I bottle it at the last second and then spend my ‘pocket money’ on something else.

Given the rumours starting to fly about new index headsets and a new quest 2 version, I'd hold off for now. Doesn't look like we're far away from some really fancy stuff.

Very true but we have no idea when those are coming out, could be years still for the Index 2.

We don't know when the psvr 2 is coming out either :D.

The fact that there's code for the new index/standlone valve headset, suggests it's not too far out now. The leaks suggest at the very least the quest 2 pro is closing in too.

Yeah I am desperately hoping for q4 2022 for the psvr 2 but you never know! 2 years after the release of the PS5 seems pretty fair.
But all this is to say the next couple years are looking very exciting for us vr lovers :D

I'm probably not going to be in a position to buy a new headset any time soon unfortunately, however, if the pricing strategies continue, it's probably only going to be the Oculus offering I'll be able to afford anyway. Definitely won't be a psvr 2, since that would require a ps5 first! Unless the boy puts in a request for a big christmas/birthday present, I don't see that happening.
