Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

No it’s 2.0... you need a good quality 3.0 cable (you can get 6.6ft/2m 3.1 gen 1 cables or 3m USB 3.0 cables like the recommended anker one for under a tenner).

As I say their exact terminology is can’t guarantee compatibility... doesn’t mean it definitely won’t work.

I’m sure they will try and have as many cards supported as possible. I’m guessing it has to do with hardware encoding of the video stream on the GPU.

Visually works great! Looks far better than my Rift CV1, though the image is very slightly soft. Controller tracking was flawless. Had a hard time telling the difference from my 3 sensor setup.

Main issue is that I have no audio. I have tried the various audio settings and switching devices but with no luck. My wireless PC headphones work OK though, so it's not a deal breaker.

Using an Amazon Basics 10ft/3m double braided USB A to USB C 3.1 cable.

To be honest, if the Oculus Link official cable is any good, I could see myself using the Quest out of preference to my CV1 (despite the comfort issues).

@Uncle Petey - actually already been using it with onward and Virtual Desktop sideloaded for wifi streaming... works fine with the quest controllers. Been really enjoying not having a cable to stand on even with the slightly less than perfect wifi streaming. Working on a new stock at the mo though!

I tried enabling the beta channel just to see if I could get the quest set up with a USB 2.0 cable but it won't even progress past the connection stage so will have to wait for that damn cable to arrive tomorrow!

Ravenger - which card do you have? Can you perceive any latency or jittering on the controller tracking?

To think thats in BETA.

I honestly struggle to see a future now for the Rift S line. I think given the Link's success as a workaround. the next Oculus headset should just be a fusion of the Quest and Rift S and users have the option to either buy the Oculus Quest or the Oculus Quest 2 similar to apple's product line. I really really hope Oculus go in the direction of multiple product lines for VR headsets as my only worry with the Quest is if it'll stunt the hardware development from the Oculus side of things.

I'm particularly excited to play Asgard's Wrath with the Quest as I've found my Rift S doesn't make it look very pretty and seems to make it feel like a game rather than an experience. The softness of CV1 I kind of took for granted but it did hide a lot of things and the better contrast made things pop more.

They say they are working with AMD to have support before end of beta, and also seeing plenty of people with 5700/5700XT, 590's Vega 64's etc saying it's working just fine already.

Can you use the beta with an unsupported Nvidia card or will it not run at all unless it detects one of the specifically listed GPU's?

Has anyone tried it with an unsupported card?

Has anyone noticed any scale issues with the Quest compared to the Rift? I noticed when trying a few games last night on Oculus Link that the scale seemed off. It seems like the world is smaller on Quest than Rift. I've noticed this before on other quest games. My IPD is set correctly (maybe the software IPD isn't matching the hardware IPD?) Would be useful to get the Software IPD value displayed when adjusting IPD to make sure it's working.

Seems ok to me at the mo. I believe they are planning to add a digital IPD readout though FYI.

Just got the USB 3.1 cable in the post... link is working with my 980Ti. It's a bit choosy about USB ports - front case ones work initially but then keep dropping in and out with a USB noise each time. The ones on the back work fine.

Generally pretty good - Stormland was chugging a bit (it's smooth in the CV1) at times but other less demanding games like pistol whip were working great so either it's seemingly putting a strain on the 980Ti to both render the more demanding games and encode the stream at the same time. I wonder if that's just some of the optimisation they need to do on the 970/980/980Ti or whether it's a limitation of the hardware and the encoding they are using.

Once I can get a 5m cable and the performance issues are solved on my card (or until I treat myself during black Friday lol) I can see myself not using the rift CV1 again.... the jump down to 72Hz doesn't seem to bother me too much and I appreciate the extra clarity in eg project cars where I can definitely see the track a bit more clearly further down the road. Might give it to a friend to see if it can spur him to build a VR ready PC and play with me lol.

My cable is coming tommorow so I'll post my impressions vs my Rift S.

I found the Rift S clarity has actually made a few games more game-like and less life like, e.g. asgards wrath so this should be interesting.

Still had no luck getting the audio working. Visually though it's very impressive. I tried Lone Echo and the visuals were way clearer than the CV1 and the hand tracking was flawless.

Just tried it out and the Oculus link seems to work really well on my PC (with a Geforce 980) even though it's not officially supported yet. Visuals look great, there's minimal latency and the audio seems good as well. I only tried a brief game of Ultrawings (Cross buy on the Oculus Store really is epic when you have the Quest and a PC!) but it all ran silky smooth.

Only issue is that my USB C cable is only 1m long so I'll need to get a 3-5m one if I want to use it with my computer. Which cable brand/length did you guys get?

I'm using the link successfully, got the Amazon basics 3m usb A to C cable - no issues at all. Used it initially plugged direct to PC, but then thought I'd try the active usb 3 extension cable (non powered) I had one of my former Rift CV1 sensors plugged in.......and to my surprise it works great (can't tell any difference with or without the extension), so in total I've got about 7m of cable.

Really glad I returned the Rift S (long story.....had a hard time getting it to work, and when it did had constant disconnects).

Image probably isn't as sharp as the Rift S, but I think it looks better than the CV1 (sold this on when I got the Rift S so can't do any direct comparisons...... I'm sure there will be some YouTube videos on this in time).

Can't really perceive any lag - played a hard level in Beat Saber, didn't notice any issues.

Tried a couple of horror and space games, really shows off how much a difference the OLED screen makes to immersion.

I'm a happy chappy now I've got access back to all my Rift games (was using them before with Revive and VD 1.8 - was ok for slow games, but anything like Beat Saber was a no go).

If anyone here has a PC headset and a Quest and got Oculus link working, can they compare the 'world size' between the two headsets? I've tried Project Cars 2 on my Rift CV1 and my Quest via Oculus Link, and the cockpit, player arms and UI are noticeably smaller - like it's using a different FOV. I'm not the only person to notice this and I'm wondering if this is an issue with all Quests or just a few.
If it's not noticeable on other Quest's I may have to open a support ticket to try to get to the bottom of it.

Have you put a post on the Quest Reddit?
