Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

The Link connection is working well for me. Using a uGreen 5 metre usb 3.0 extension cable is working with the 1m usb 3.0 type A to C Syncwire cable. It may not be elegant but it is still less cable than a separate usb and video cable. need some headset cable management though

Gutted, there's no black Friday deals on the quest. Star wars shizz is not a deal, it's something I don't need.... like treading in dog poo.
Fifty quid off would've offset the cost of the official link cable a bit.:(:confused::(

Yeah its a shame this is not discounted as I would be tempted to try VR again but dont fancy forking out £400 for motion sickness.

Is the 64gb worth it or is it a problem with storage space ?

For most people the 64gb is plenty. I've got the 128gb, and it's only just over half full with games and content (including side-loaded games and movies). If you're loading 3D movies directly onto it then maybe the 128gb is better.
Of course it's likely that game iinstall sizes will increase over time as more full games get developed or ported over, which is one reason I got the 128gb, as you can't upgrade the internal storage.

I guess the problem is they have no need of putting it on sale if they are selling everything they are making anyway.... I was uhming and ahhing over it but eventually just jumped in and don't regret it - even if they knocked 50 quid off next week I've had more than 50 quid's worth of enjoyment out of it since buying it so meh!

64gb is fine imo unless you are planning on storing lots of video. Most games seem to come in at under a gig and the only ones that are bigger are 2-3 at most from what I've seen... unless you are going somewhere without internet you don't need to store video locally as you can access it either over network or internet.

Much better to get the 64gb and put some of the £100 towards some games and accessories. £100 for an extra 64gb is criminal anyway!

The other question is just how much profit are Oculus actually making on each headset? I can't help but think that for the headset/chipset/ram/SSD/battery and manufacturing costs, development plus support/warranty they might not actually be making a huge amount of money on each sold. I suspect that's the reason they're gouging customers so hard for the, so far largely unnecessary, 128gb upgrade.

The rift S and Quest are selling for the same money yet the Quest must be costing more to manufacture. Plus look at how much more Valve and HTC are charging for their headsets versus Oculus. Its notable that the Rift S received a price cut for black Friday but not the Quest

It'd be interesting to see a cost analysis of how much money is a required to manufacture a VR headset?

What's really amazing about the Quest is the ability to take it to huge spaces. I've been able to take mine to a large empty office floor on a few occasions and being able to move freely around a large area rather than using teleport or thumbstick movement is an incredible experience.

Just bought one of the b grades for £364 thought I would take a bit of a chance and see what its like. Ordered some cheap headphones, a power bank (PD) and a 3m cable for trying out Link.

Whats the experience like using the Link software ?

How have folk been getting on playing Steam VR games using Oculus link? There are some good offers on the sale just now and I was wondering if there were any issues playing Steam games using Oculus link?

Would it be safer to buy games from the Oculus store rather than the Steam Store or is the experience and compatability identical?

Pretty much flawless and identical to a wired headset from the Oculus store games I've tried playing so far!

I've had no issues with Creed Rise to Glory or Zero Caliber VR from Steam VR running on my Quest using the Oculus link :)

My B grade Quest arrived today not tried it yet just took it out of the box but surprised its brand new. All 4 seals intact, lens covers and card insert still in place etc.

No issues here other than sometimes it says "doesn't support your headset" if you choose to launch on oculus VR mode on the games that support oculus SDK... launch and work fine though regardless.

Well I think I might be finally hooked on VR. Tried it last night with the kids and its a pretty good experience. Having not to worry about any wires is great. I have a slight problem where despite which glasses I wear its not fully in focus. Tried Beat Sabre, Creed and Space Pirate Trainer. Beat Sabre and Space Pirate are great and my kids love it. Creed was flippin scary when I first tried it having to face off full height against a Computer fighter but soon got the hang of it.

Looked at the games available and it looks rather disappointing I thought there would be more.

Currently investigating into Beat Sabre modding, Sidequest and Link which I will try later this evening.

Try changing the angle of the headset up and down too - I find I need it to point a little down to get the most clarity.

Also consider some lens adaptors - seen lots of people complaining about damaging their quest lenses from glasses rubbing (and damaging their glasses for that matter!). You can get magnetic ones that just pop in and out with the required lens installed.

If you are sideloading, well worth looking at virtual desktop. You have to buy it on the normal quest app store, but sideload it instead and it will give you access to wifi streaming from your desktop which is working surprisingly well for me... picture quality is actually better than link currently for me and latency is around 35-40ms which is absolutely fine for the majority of games I've tried.

edit - diy magnetic lens adaptors here https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3659124 I believe there are commercial alternatives.

Games wise, the catalogue is definitely limited at the moment but I suppose that's better than flooded with rubbish. With link/ALVR/Virtual desktop you have access to all of steam anyway.

Moss is a beautiful game if you haven't seen it yet, not tried it on quest (sadly not crossbuy) but on rift it was a stunning and enjoyable game that is probably suitable for the family too. ultrawings is pretty good too, better than I thought it would be... Tempted to try out A fisherman's tale too as that looks cleverly done.

Other games that are worth a look - Pistol Whip, Superhot, The Vader Immortal trilogy (expensive given the short experience but very well done overall and the dojo gives some replay value). If you like Creed apparently thrill of the fight is better according to most impressions I've seen but not tried myself.

There are some gems on there, just have to look a bit too hard lol. I find it better to browse the oculus app on the phone generally.

Robo Recall is really good and I'd recommend ultrawings if you like the idea of a pilot wings style flight sim in VR.

I've heard racket nx is great though haven't tried it yet.

I've managed to get Sidequest going and installed BSMG to allow custom songs in Beat Saber. For some reason the Sidequest app is not showing on the headset even though I've installed it. I installed Virtual Desktop via Sidequest and that works so far.

Just a little update:

Got Virtual Desktop working, had a little trouble with audio but managed to get it going. Using Steam VR - tried Trials on Tatooine and it actually worked ! First time I've managed to watch it in VR! Pretty good being able to see my desktop in VR. Had a quick go with Google Earth VR too and that worked flawlessly.

It does not show there either. I watched a Youtube Vid and the guy had the Sidequest App in Library/Apps. Watched another and he had it on unknown sources. Not too bothered as using Sidequest Windows app with cable works okay.

With regards to Link just cant get that to work. First off the 3m USB 3.1 cable I bought off Amazon didnt work Oculus said it was a USB 2.0 no matter what port I had. So I got another 2m one I have had ages and that worked and Oculus recognised it as USB 3. The Oculus app/wrapper thing keeps crashing on the helmet and even when I enable it through the pop up I try running an Oculus game/app from Oculus windows and nothing happens just get a spinning circle on the game thumbnail.

So far Virtual Desktop looks great but need to test it further but wouldnt mind trying to get link working to see what is the best. Virtual D seems the way forward if fast enough as "no wires" and can play Steam VR.
