Oculus Rift Dev ownership - My thoughts

Best 'real' VR experience so far is a game I've never heard of before called 'Dear Esther', I spend a good twenty minutes just wandering up and down a windswept overcast british beach looking at the scenery. I even set up a desk fan so it would feel like the wind on my face. With the sqawking seagulls and gentle washing in and out of the tide, I completely forgot where I was. An amazing experience for something so apparently mundane http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7VJ4lP-05A

I don't have any details on how to get it working. My mate had it already set up.
Aiming was done by looking at stuff with turning beyond head movement was with the gamepad/keyboard.
It was totally awesome though.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the dev kit unless you are an uber-geek and like to play with alpha software. It's not a case of plugging it in and having every game work. Only a very few work and those that do have control issues or other alpha software bugs.

The final OR hardware, coupled with the Leap Motion (clicky) is going to be utterly amazing.

This is coming true:

OH MY GOD

I am 100% Buying that

Diagro I can answer any questions you might have prior to deciding, I'm pretty well versed in it now.

What can i say....been to have a try out on goodl occulus rift tonight....i was blown away...first demo he put on was a rollercoaster within castle walls....i wanted to get off before it go to the top lol ...when looking up down over your shoulder it was as if you where really there....had a go of half life 2....all i can say is its a different experience tha just using your monitor...i think future development is going to be great and the future is going to be VR for gaming imo.

Next time..Skyrim, Hawken, Mass Effect and War Thunder

I got to say I really want to buy this now. But I will wait for the full model. It does look extremely cool. My inner geek tells me money is no object TAKE MY MONEY, my brain says wait...... THEN TAKE MY MONEY ! :p

its really not that expensive for a dev model, But good on you for being sensible, I on the other hand am not, my inner geek drives me

I've been following this for a whilst and it does look fantastic. BUT i dont think it will get to the mass public for two reasons. The need for space for it to work properly and the lazyness of most gamers. As goodl mentioned skyrim i'll use it as my example. Skyrims a huge game and to be fully imersed your going to want to be able to walk around in that world for real or at least i would why go for vr and still be sat down? But in the same breath the world of skyrim is friggin huge! how much room are you going to need to be able to walk around it? without spinning in circles in your bedroom or game room? The sim where the people were walking over the beam? That was a tiny bit of a game world and look how much physical room it took?

I just thought of another reason why it could be difficult, if you've a headset on and useing M+K your going to need to be pretty good at locating all your buttons without seeing :\ I've been a pc gamer for a long whilst and still need to look for buttons once in a whilst lol.

I do hope it picks up and silly little problems like i mention are non excistant but im not holding my breath, i see it more of a novel little fad that wont really go anywere.

Sorry to put a downer on it and be 'mr negative' lol

Thanks OP for your views on the OR.
Just ordered tonight, so hoping I get to try this in a month or so. I feel like a kid on the run up to Xmas :D

Are there any driving games with proper Rift support yet? If so, have you tried any?

I think a force feedback steering wheel combined with a rift could be an awesome combination. Imagine driving from a cockpit view and being able to look out the side windows/behind you

Sorry I may have missed something here, but why would you want to walk around with the Rift when you control what's happening in the game via KB/M or Joystick?

Yes, you dont walk around the room, you just use a razer hydra or xbox pad, either have eisily locatable buttons without being able to see them and twin sticks for navigation. You dont need a mouse, you use your head as the 'mouselook'

Driving games, yes, theres Dirt 2 and 3 both have head tracking support, they didnt at first and it was a vomit comet but its much better now the tracking is in.

Today I received my Sony bloggie 3d camera, I can now take family home movies and watch them back on the rift. Impressive results so far
