Went to OcUK yesterday with my mate to try out the demo. We were looked afyer by simon who allowed us extra time because the next person didnt show...cheers!
My mate has pre ordered and i am slightly kicking myself for not doing the same, he only lives down the road though so i can rinse it round his! It was a really different experience and not what i expected at all. The potential for not just gaming but education/training could be endless.

Both technologies rely on the end user strapping some contraption or other to their face, and as 3DTV has demonstrated, the general Joe Bloggs isn't interested in any of that.

Thing is - 3DTV is rubbish. VR, on the other hand, is ****ing fantastic!

Joe Bloggs will be interested. He/she will be completely blown away. They may not be able to justify the cost, but I can and that's their problem :D

Got my Rift dispatch notification today. Get hype! :D

Get ****ed

:p

Only joking and gutted mine is not shipping because the Halifax blocked it. Hopefully by the weekend though as I am off for 10 days from Sunday :)

I'm in the same position with the Vive. I'm away for two weeks from Sunday. Sods law says it arrives next Monday morning and then gets shipped back to HTC when I don't collect it in the specified period

There are a lot of people overreacting about the delivery organisation (or lack of it) but both the Rift and Vive do seem be pretty badly handled

Fingers crossed for you mate :p

I'm impressed with them waiving the delivery charges too. It now being under 5 ton is a lot more mentally acceptable than the previous 5 ton plus.

I'd have probably had it sooner if I hadn't spent the first few mins wondering why Chrome was making the site bug out. Once I tried IE it worked fine. I got my order in at 00:05:50 after the launch time.

I was laughing about the new VR ride at Alton Towers. It took 3-5 minutes to strap the thing to your face but the ride only lasts about a minute. Sounds pretty hairy though a rollercoaster where you ride it in the superman position but the visuals are supplied by the VR headset.

Looking at the current poll 20% uptake is not that brilliant.

What do people expect?

Its a technology that frankly you don't need to enjoy games with, its a luxury wrapped inside what is already a luxury (gaming).

Given the generally positive reviews I'm seeing, I'm softening a bit to the idea of it. Thinking maybe I should give it a look when there's a demo available to me.

I'm heading to the USA in a couple of weeks so maybe I should take a larger suitcase than usual this time. :D

Gah. I want to change my vote. I voted for the Rift but since then I've cancelled and gone Vive. I wonder if the poll is still valid?

From my limited trying out of the rift last night I can say it's a vast improvement on the DK2. I'm still to try out Eve Valkyrie, Elite Dangerous etc but Lucky's Tale was fun (if you've played Adventure Time on the GearVR it's kind of the same), all the various demos were cool and Farlands looks awesome.

It does need more games/demos though. Also Sega need to fix Alien Isolation rift support. I tried it on the DK2 with the workaround and put off playing it any more until Rift release, only now to find out it doesn't work...

Screen door effect is practically non-existent but there is 'god rays' on high contrast images (like black text on white background). You forget it's there after a while though and on low contrast/detailed images like in most games it's fine.

Jealous

I'm sticking with my DK2 currently as I only really play Elite with it for hopefully a price drop but if it's massively better then I suppose other upgrades will have to wait :P Please update when you've tried Elite for a comparison :)

I ordered a Vive, apparently it will be shipped to me next month.

How are other expectant Vive owners going to attach the lighthouses to the wall? I'm not sure if I can drill the wall as I live in rented accommodation and need ideas or links to alternatives.

I've tried a few more things now. Eve Valkyrie made me motion sick as hell. Not so much because of anything VR related, more because combat is basically spinning round in circles trying not to get owned by invincible bots. Screw that game.

I have noticed the glare/god rays today a lot more in pretty much everything. It's not game breakingly bad but just slightly distracting.

Elite Dangerous works well tbh. I need to set up my hotas again but from a quick test with a pad it seems a lot better than the DK2, specifically the text readability.

I recorded a quick video through one of the lenses so you can see the quality. It's a ballache trying to hold the rift, keep the phone in focus and keep the face sensor covered so it stays on so apologies if it's not as sharp as I could have made it.

I also had to move the phone about a bit at times to get it refocused so you'll see me hovering over text a bit to adjust.
