Well hopefully this time next month I will be with the retail version of the Oculus Rift (or soon after anyways). Seems like an eternity wait :(

I suspect the technology, and bringing down the supporting costs required, is some way off before we start seeing features like 4k+ resolutions and a wrap-around/periphery vision-like experience. I rarely early adopt any technology so am happy to take a punt now and again. As someone who recalls (and endured) the VR experience back in the 80s/90s I'm rather looking forward to it!

I can't believe I feel so genuinely meh about both. I guess it's a symptom of getting older. 20 years ago I would have sold my granny to have a home VR solution, no matter what it was like. Now I just think it will be under whelming as I'm too technically picky and I won't be able to get past the lack of resolution of something so close to my eyes.

Maybe it's because I tried the first occulus dev kit out a few years ago, and was thoroughly underwhelmed. Is the release version tech of the rift and the Vive light years ahead of the early stuff, or not? I haven't really kept up to speed on either.

And, just a quick thought on pricing..... I don't get why people think these are way too expensive, when loads on here are forking out for substandard, defect ridden 34" superwide gaming 1440p monitors at a grand a pop. Having said that, I think I'd rather have one of those, if I could get a good one with no faults.

Having been there, the 1440p Freesync/Gsync lottery is a complete joke.

Fair points, but you won't have experienced the better displays, tracking and hand controllers that the consumer versions will have which all add a lot.

Also, almost anything bar a few exceptions that you will have played with a DK2 will have been bodged to work or be tech demos, no? So the software wasn't there either.

I set up the lense`s from my DK2 and compared the 1440 x 2560 pixels of a Note 4 screen, wasn't much better imo.

It was fun using Alien isolation\Live for Speed\Half life 2\Trackmania etc
but rez/fov always held it back for me, if they crack that I will get one no doubt.

I'll get a Vive if the prices come down. I would have taken a punt at under £500 but it's a bit of a gamble for me at those prices. The current games seem a bit kinecty to me too.

I got myself a 3D projector a couple of years ago and it seems to have died a death now. Once bitten!

I really want one but im personally waiting untill both are released so i can read reviews. Ill be spending £4000 or so on a new OLED soon so can't really afford to buy one of these aswell at the moment. I will definatley get one but im going to wait for a while first. No rush.

Waiting for reviews but also the 2nd generation hardware. That's when I tend to buy. Have them iron out all bugs first.

Like 3D TV, I have no interest in this tech. Although I have the hardware to power it, I just see it as an extension of the Wii Sports thing, and that was pish.

I'd take 4k curved wide-screen at 70fps+ before this fad, and hopefully the quest to run VR will see GPUs evolve to power 4k at that rate.

It's definitely a case of try it and see if you feel the same, but I know what you mean. This will probably never replace a nice high quality monitor.
But for the chance to actually be standing inside places like Tamriel, I can't wait.

Have you tried any modern VR solution, out of interest?

Nothing we have currently can come even remotely close to what VR has to offer even the first generation hardware blows even the best traditional 2D has to offer out of the water.

Once you strap on the HMD and play a game like Elite Dangerous or Project Cars in VR you WILL never be able to play those games on a 2D monitor ever again. No matter how huge or high resolution your monitor is.

There's no way to explain just how incredible it really is, a 2D screen will always be just that, even a 3D monitor is still a 2D panel with slight depth perception. VR you are literally right in the action. Your IN the cockpit, your IN the driving seat looking out into a fully realised 3D world, with perfect depth perception and an incredible sense of scale, you very quickly accept it as real.
