Oculus Rift

The render target is larger than the native res of the display as well, so you're actually doing a fair bit more work than the display specs would have you believe.

Can't remember exactly what the DK2 render target was but it was a good chunk bigger, 10-20% more pixels iirc.

Multi resolution rendering will be what makes it work for the first generation, followed swiftly by foveated rendering in combination with multi res.

With that working flawlessly even 4k+ will be possible with current or the next generation of gpu.

'The tricky bit comes in where the screen is 2160x1080, but due to the warping needed for the optics you end up over-rendering a load of pixels that the user never sees...there are ways round this like Nvidia's multi resolution rendering, or another would be foveated rendering, but we've not seen these implemented yet'

Or was that total 2160 x 1080 instead of per eye?

2160 x 1200 is the total screen resolution across both eyes, so 1080 x 1200 each. The actual rendered resolution is higher though, closer to 1200 x 1500 and as a result of the warping required.

This will be interesting, im still unsure about it as to whether i will remember my controls whilst in the rift.
Also wonder if it will make my fibro play up and make me dizzy, but the immersion factor should be excellent.

its no going to be cheap since doesn't it include an xbone controller.

Unlikely this will effect the actual cost. They've gone on record countless times saying they're going to be selling at cost and that the relationships they've created with MS means the Xbox One controller they're shipping with will be effectively a freebee - even said you'd make money selling it on if you don't want it or have one already.

Both developer kits have been £300 mark (including postage) and all signs point to it being about the same for the first consumer version, especially since the touch controllers are shipping separately - which definitely would bump up the cost by at least £100.

Does it need to be Xbox one? Because I have plenty of regular 360 controller around.

Also, even though I think the Vive with inbuilt controllers and Lighthouse tech may be better.. I am still tempted!

As I'll be primarily using it with a HOTAS setup for ED and DCS, would be useful to get to buy it without the add ons. Let's hope they offer that as an option.

It's definitely going to cost more than DK1 or DK2. They've confirmed this already.

XB1 controller comes standard. But Touch/2nd camera are separate. Just sell the XB1 controller if you don't want/need it.

Plamer Lucky has categorically stated, multiple times, that they won't offer the Rift without the Xbox One controller at launch.

Obviously that has the potential to change, as everything does, but the consistent hardware base that can be targeted by developers means everyone benefits.

While I 10000000% agree with you that ED and DCS will be the muts nuts with a HOTAS (warthog and mfg crosswind owner myself) there's nothing garunteeing that either of those games will be Rift ready at launch (although I bloody hope they are!) One thing you can garuntee is that if you don't have a game pad you'll likely miss out on the ability to play a LOT of launch titles.

Hell, the two bundled games were game pad only for a while. Only recently has Eve Valkarie added HOTAS support to their alpha.

So yeah, take the Oculus provided advice and sell on the pad if you don't need it.

Also - Borja - no, as with any game you'll just need "a controller", it's just they're supplying one with it.
