Oculus Rift

So much about 'affordable VR'. :D Kinda expected something like that. They were very hush-hush about the price.

It's about £120-£150 over the estimation, and even that was kinda high ($450, around £380-£400 VAT and all).

Classic feature creep problem I think, all the extra unnecessary stuff (headphones, games, controller), and underestimated the cost of shipping and developing a consumer product. Loosing sight of the initial goal and going all-out.

I suspect they are not even making a profit on those. Vive might actually be relatively affordable, as long as they don't use Unicorn-grade materials and optics (like, I wouldn't be surprised, Oculus).

Will be an interesting CES for sure. If Valve doesn't specifies a price for the Vive, then it's probably gonna be expensive as well.

If they do and it is actually cheaper than the Rift, or even competitive, Oculus may have dropped the ball somewhere (and I don't think they'd be screwing the pre-order customers intentionally). Then expect a lot of pre-orders jumping ship to the Vive (I know I might do).

I genuinely think those hoping for the Vive to be cheaper, will be disappointed.

I wouldn't expect it to be cheaper necessarily, but the Vive will at least come bundled with a cutting edge control system - unlike the X-Box control pad everyone has to put up with till the end of the year with the Rift.

Too rich for my blood I think. That said, I'm happy to wait to see how it all pans out. Perhaps this time next year I'll be looking at a (hopefully slightly cheaper) unit.

Fair comment and I wouldn't mind having a play on the Vive also. I don't have that much room in my gaming room sadly (tiny box room) and walking about isn't an option, so I am more inclined for the controller (even though I have one already and don't need the Rift one).

I'm out. Far too expensive :(
With such a high price, the user base will be pretty small and what developers (particularly indys) are going to bother developing for it now since the number of game sales would be pretty small too?

Hey ,

Just ran the oculus PC compatibility checker and I was surprised, to say the least, to see that my AMD 8350 8 core currently running at 4ghz and zero degrees centigrade due to the rads being on the outside of my house, has FAILED !

They are talking about single core processing power, is there something superior or different in the intel architecture that favours Oculus?

Sorry to say it, but the 8350 is a relatively old (2012?) CPU, and raw clockspeed isn't everything these days. Even a business class i5 would probably outperform it now.

If it helps, I don't meet the minimum requirement either :D
