Oculus Rift

ahh this...well theres problems with it. The treadmill movement problems.

have to dash to work but will reply later if no one else hasnt.

Heres a review of the final version of the omni - has potential but movement is quite awkward which is a shame because i would be interested in this kind of product.

Thanks - just seen this, will have a look later.

Can anyone please answer these questions for me:

  1. Oculus have said they aren't making a profit from the Oculus Rift when it launches so out of curiosity, where are they getting their profits from?

  2. For anyone that has used a cheap VR option like Google Cardboard, Freefly VR or Homido etc, and then tried an expensive high end VR option like Oculus Rift afterwards, I was wondering if you could explain to me how much better the visuals and optics were? Is it out of this world? And how good is the quality of what you actually see? Is it crystal clear visuals and optics?

  3. Also Has anyone heard much yet about how much the Touch Controllers will cost?

  4. Will we definitely be able to experience full room scale VR with Oculus Rift at some point in the future? - I've read mixed bags of information online where some people state Oculus is only for sitting and others saying when you buy the Touch controllers in the future you will get an extra Tracking Camera which will allow you to do full room scale VR?

  5. I'm really excited to get a VR Headset and I'm dead set on getting an Oculus Rift, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any research regarding our eyes? What I mean is, if we're playing games in these VR headsets for hours and hours which I really hope we can do then I was wondering weather or not it hurts our eyes either in the moment or over time? Has anyone read any research on this or what is your opinion?

Thanks in advance.

1. Mark Zuckerbergs deep pockets

2. Used google cardboard, gearvr and the vive. Its like the difference between a smart car and ferrari. Totally different experience.

3. No idea but the general guess is around £150

4. Rift supports room scale as well but they are not pushing it, you are limited by the cameras though which require a USB connection each. The Vive lighthouse base stations require no connections at all.

5. No its perfectly fine, but the technology is too new for any expensive long term research.

I'll answer point 2. I own a DK2 and have also played with Gear VR.

The difference is like the following:

Cardboard / Gear VR is like playing FarCry 4 on a midrange PC with graphics on low, on a 20" TN screen, with a gamepad.
Rift and Vive is like playing FarCry 4 on a top end PC with graphics on Ultra, at 120fps, on three 32" screen in an NVSurround conviguation, with a top-end mouse and keyboard.

So, similar experience but smoother, better, less laggy, and with more freedom and immersion.

Oculus will be making their money by taking a cut of the price paid on games sold through their storefront.

I heard in the ether that said games from Oculus store will be locked/compatible only with the rift. So no VIVE play on there. Hopefully just rumour.

Stuff on the Oculus store will indeed be only compatible with the Rift due to the reliance on Rift SDK. I supposed there's nothing to stop non-exclusive titles also being released on Steam though.

This is why I think the Vive and Steam VR will ultimately become the default. If you program for Steam VR you support both devices. Program for Rift SDK and you only support the Rift.

Yeah but unfortunately it will mean that if you have a CV1 then you have bigger pool of vr games to choose from. Some people will use that to factor in which device to go for.

Also whilst i like the idea of the Vive and moving around experiences. Some devs are going with a "teleporting" solution for making use of the small spaces people have . (ie move a bit then teleport to the next space)

Whereas...... if i have a rift then smt like a virtuix omni would be perfect.

Dont see how the omni (and similar devices) go hand in hand with the Vive type experiences)

Thats what I'm thinking, I really want an Oculus Rift and then bundled with Virtuix Omni or have you seen their competitor? it's called Cyberith, basically same thing but with slight variation: http://cyberith.com/

For some reason now my Oculusconfig program is showing "HMD powered off, check HDMI" reinserted the HDMI and camera cables, to no avail. The most recent software changes have been game ready Nvidia drivers and a Win 10 update.

Any fixes I could try?

That looks excellent. Looks kinda messy though with a lot of cables. If they can streamline that down somehow so as to not require half an hour of prep prior to playing then it could be a very big step in the right direction (no pun intended).

I've just heard some new news regarding Oculus Rift, I heard that they're working on introducing their own version of a chaperone system called a "pre programmed safe zone".

Has anybody else heard anything about this? I cant find anything searching google but I heard this guy mention it in a youtube video.

BUMP

Anybody heard anything regarding my last post above? And also I was watching another youtube review video on Oculus Rift and it said that Oculus are making their own version of Google Tilt Brush where it's more advanced and it feels more like actually sculpturing, has anybody heard about this too and what its called?

Would love to know the name of it so I can watch some videos.

Thanks in advance.

Not seeing anything on Reddit for either of those things, and it's usually a pretty good source of information, for the most part.
