Oculus Rift

Ooo mircosoft now has me interested. Source?
Technically it isn't Microsoft releasing anything - they provided a reference design and other companies are making HMDs based on that. Asus, Acer, Dell, Lenovo and HP are all releasing a headset, and if some "leaked" images are to be believed, so is Samsung. The Samsung one could possibly be the best of the bunch due to integrated audio like the Rift. Don't underestimate the value of integrated headphones - once you've used them, having to use separate headphones with a HMD seems like a total PITA.

All of the headsets have a 3.5jack or atleast the ones I've seen have. Meaning we dont need to roll around with cables anyway :P

True, but having separate headphones still gives you one more thing to manage. I have a Rift and PSVR, and although it seems like a small thing, it's just way easier to stick the Rift on my head. With PSVR, it's headset on, get headphones comfortable, find controllers.

It might sound like I'm being really picky about it, but once you try attached headphones and go back to separate ones, you realise just how convenient they are. Back to the Samsung one though, more reports are saying it's called the Odyssey and that Samsung will unveil it in October.

I have the rift so i do understand. Having the one cable and not 50 is really nice

From what I've read, technically/visually the Hololens/Micsrosoft based HMD's won't be up to Rift/Vive specs. Is that right or will they be on a par? Can't imagine if they're undercutting the price if they can beat the tech?

They have higher resolution displays 2x1440x1440 vs Rift/Vive 2x1080x1200, both a plus and minus. Controller tracking is limited though due to the system's need to see the controller to position it accurately. It becomes a game of pin the tail on the donkey if your not looking at your hands. Blank walls or green screen setups confuse the headset tracking as it continually requires a point of reference. Price wise they will be around £400-£450.

If putting bunny ears on your cat is your thing then go for a MR headset. Otherwise grab a Rift or Vive.

It's not really going to be a replacement for those of us with Rifts or Vives. It's all about the pros and cons though. Res per eye is 1440x1440 which beats the Rift and Vive, but it's using LCD not OLED.

The tracking is inside out, so no need for sensors/base stations, but the controllers are only trackable within the forward facing range of the headset. However, for people who need a portable solution to take with them to demo software, it beats the Rift and Vive for pure convenience due to simplicity of setup.

Depending on visual quality though, they might be a good alternative for sim racing gamers who aren't bothered about tracked controllers, and just want more resolution. I won't be rushing out to buy one, but I'll still be interested to see the reviews. Anything that tempts more people into VR can only be a good thing though.

I'm having a weekend off, the kids have given me a clod. Just can't concentrate with my sinuses aching like hell and my eyes feeling gritty...anybody else tried Rift with a cold?

How's the immersion experience?
I have never tried it.

It's amazing. I had a few friends around Saturday that never tried VR before. They had seen videos, read reviews and looked at pictures and were like "MEH" After trying VR they were stunned at how good it was. And they only tried the Dream Deck and First Contact demos as we didn't have time for more.

If you can afford it, get one.

I will have to get it as my girlfriend tried at work and now want one.
