OCZ Vertex SSD

I'd rather spend the extra money and get the X25 from Intel, but then again i wont be buying any SSD until they come down in price by at least 200% - but seeing as Seagate, Fujitsu, Western Digital and all the other storage companies i know people in have SSD as their main focus in their roadmaps, its not a crazy thought to see those kinds of reductions this year.

Yeah, being paid £450 to own an x25 would be a pretty good deal! :D I'm guessing you meant 50%, not 200%? :p

But I agree with you - SSDs look fantastic on paper, but are coming down in price so quickly that it's very hard to justify buying one now. I know that it's always possible to play the waiting game with computer hardware (and never actually buy anything), but with the rate that SSDs are coming down in price and going up in capacity I think that waiting is justified in this case.

I agree with waiting, but that's not stopped me from pre-ordering a 60GB vertex...I've been itching to get a bigger SSD for a while now and think the vertex should be adequate until my next major upgrade.

With the Vertex. What would be the speed increase booting into windows?...worth it over my WD 250GB 7200rpm? If we talking like 10 seconds to load windows...what a dream :)

from post to usable vista 64, my 640GB F1 samsung only takes 1 min. if its half that speed, ill deffo get one

From what I've seen it's usually 30-40 seconds boot time using an SSD (in vista, no doubt older OS' will boot faster). And then everything *should* be accessible straight away. Thats one thing that irritates me about my machine, it takes a good 2-3 minutes to boot into a useable state. I just can't justify the current prices for SSD's to buy one yet. I reckon in 12 months time they'll be really worth it though.

hmm according to the stats, vertex ssd's have an MTBF that equates to 171 years.. I wonder how often that will prove to be true. I am seriously considering getting a 30gb vertex for the os. Having a fast boot would be great, but I am put off by all the problems that plagued the first generation.

it seems a lot of money to just improve your boot time. is it that critical to improve that? how often do you turn on/off your pc anyway? i thought it was the norm to just leave pc's on???

Can of worms opened! Short answer: no, at home it shouldn't be the norm to leave PCs on. Lets not debate this into the ground though...
