OCZ Vertex SSD

I am tempted by the 60gig vertex, but I would be using it purely as a gaming drive, and not as the boot/OS drive.

For pure smooth gameplay and fast loads, I wonder if it will satisfy.

anyone else done this with the previous generation drives, what were your experiences good or bad?

I've heard good things about using it with world of warcraft (where you have obscene quantities of textures being loaded from hard drive), but not sure about performance in smaller games.

i have two raptor 75gb in raid0, would ssds be much better??

Yes, with Vertex and Apex (wait for reviews first). Older series of SSD are more debatable, where there can be lag issues when trying to read from and write to an SSD at the same time.

I am moving overseas and I was hoping I would get the Vertex before I leave but it seems they are still on pre-order. Since no one mentioned it yet - they're perfect for laptops, in my view. Right now in my MacBook Pro, a poor 5400rpm HDD is clearly the worst component and I am willing to pay extra for the upgrade. Any updates on the availability?

so would it be worth me getting one of these over my current raptor for faster map loads in game, and how much of a diffence do u think there would be in say a game like CoD WaW say a map takes around 10 secs to load up what do u think it would be with one of these drives?

thx

There was mention they were shipping from Manufactuer to suplliers this week howver I believe there is a V6 Frimware update going on so guess we need to wait a little longer for an exact date. Lets hope its in the next few weeks.

Performance news...

i have seen over 1500 IO's in the 4k random write test on a 10Gb test file...

Availability news... (posted yesterday)

we have the drives....lots of them, hell I have 4 here with me now here

Not sure I believe much of what is stated about new SSDs at the moment until they get a pounding by the public..

Things are going to get interesting with the Intel pricecuts. hopefully we can get a proper price war on our hands!
The raw flash costs less that £1/gb (going by USB stick prices) And controller costs are pretty negligible in large amounts, so there's plenty of room for prices to fall further. I can't imagine it costs more than £1/gb + £20 to put an SSD on the shelves.

Got to say I was thinking about RAID 0'ing two Velicoraptors but I'm really tempted to get just one Vertex 30GB.

Am I right in thinking the Vertexes are newer than the Apexes?

Nope vertex are there new performance line (they use a new controller and have a decent cache of 32 or 64mb) We should be seeing performance in the area of the Intel Drives.

Apex are dubbed as budget perfromance however its an interesting area as currently Apex on Hardware raid with a good cache are extremely bloody fast...

Heres an example 2 Disks in Raid 0
