OCZ Vertex SSD

I think I might have to buy one of these 120Gb vertex's if they perform as in these benchmarks. The price will have to drop to significantly though. Not paying over 200 for one of these.

£200 or $? If £ they are for 200, so the price should go lower, as was told - hopefully... but don't expect huge differences, I say 5% max...

Doubt theyl only reduce it 10MB/s, but we'll see. They'l probably aim for only a little higher than intels. They also mentioned releasing the unlimited card for more cash was a possibility.

Tom on his forum mentioned already th speeds that can be left at the end and they were not that low... he also mentioned that 30 and 60 GB version should be same as first spec given when Vertex was announced - 200/160...

Will the on-board raid chip handle 2xVertex in Raid-0 since they added cache now?

im wondering that too... not sure if i wanna get 2 x 30gb AND a £200 raid card

i wonder what the performance difference between

2x vertex in raid 0 with ONBOARD motherboard raid controller

and 2x apex with a proper raid controller

then 2x vertex with proper raid controller just for shizzle and giggles

Did you guys see test results of Vertex? Check OCZ forum!
250/240MB speeds are incredible! This is for 120GB version with 64MB cache. Write speeds faster than read!

They also said that that was Best Case scenario on an Empty drive (and indicated that the more data you have on them, the slower it goes) and also that it wasn't likely to ship with that firmware.

Lets see what the reviews are like. Personally i'd like to see IOPS benchmarks against an X-25 rather than sustained transfer willy-waving.

I have to say Indilinx have the funkiest site out :D They quote 230MB/sec read, 170MB/sec write for the controller and supports upto 512GB.

Also they have 'Jetstream' which is an SATA3 (6GB/sec) controller.. so you can see where OCZ will be going next.. prototype H2Y09.. so I suspect that this will make it's way into OCZ drives for christmas if they have any sense..

I'd be comfortable paying >£150 for a 120Gb. Definetely no more than £200. They're more than twice that currently, which is too pricey imo.. But with the way prices have been falling maybe this xmas I'll get my wish.

Presumably these drives will suffer the same problems as the intels as described here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17977607

Was getting excited about SSDs but not so sure now.

They do some tests at the end of the PCPer Vertex preview linked above, seems like it is affected, though not quite as badly as the Intels.

It'll be good to see more detailed info when they do the full review.

Ok, So Tony had a Poll on the official forum asking which firmware people would like to see shipped on the drives.

Results:

around 85>100MB/s writes but best IO performance 405 49.27%
around 130>150MB/s writes mid level IO performance 364 44.28%
180>240MB/s writes and low IO performance. 53 6.45%

And Tony has gone with best IO performance option. So the drives should be out soon now.

At first glance it looks like a big disadvantage.. But the performance gains in multitasking etc, make it the right choice I think. If people are wanting high sequential writes they're probably better getting a couple of drives in Raid-0.

They'll probably release the different firmwares at some point, so people might eventually be able to choose for themselves anyway.

I have been reading the ocz forums intently the last few days and I have a few thoughts.

First of all the user interaction and testing has been second to none, listening to what the people want is exactly what's need for the leading edge of developing technology. lets hope they continue this on towards sata3, moving to smaller nm flash and raid controllers.

As one person has said on that thread, the time left for testing and QA is now very limited so i'm planning on waiting a little time for the dust to settle and some more people to do some real usage testing. However for where the industry is now this drive seems to have the latest drive hardware and price per gig. with flash manufactures in the process of moving to 50nm fabs (what are they now? i dont know!) there will likely me another big jump some time later in the year.

what i hope they end up with is a slightly better middle ground that still hads high io's but boosts the write speed over 100-120 mb's. i am no expert but that to me would seem to be the sweet spot.

anyway, for me the windows 7 RC is now lined up to be due on 10th April, so ill be looking at the 120gig drive around then.

Dan, exciting times

I actually voted for the medium IO option, and the results of the pool showed 44% going for that option, the high IO's got 48% of the vote. What was clear is that most people wanted higher IO's over sequential writing.

The drives will be flashable so maybe there will be a chance to choose your ideal firmware after the drives have shipped. I wouldn't rule it out when it comes to OCZ.

Talking about Windows 7 RC, I didn't realise they were gonna start in April. Thats good news if the case, I'm looking forward to trying the new OS out with some SSD drives
