OCZ Vertex SSD

problem is it wasnt said that VErtex will NOT have those issues... it still can have them..:(

Very true - if the OS locks on a write attempt, the drive can't handle the amount of write traffic (ie fills cache) due to the MLC being too slow it will stop unless the OS has been written to take notice of the drive's state rather than assume that it will be able to write.
Only problem is the OS has been written that way so that data is committed to disc to reduce corruption.

Any actual update from OCUK on when these might be available? They have been available to pre-order for a loooooooooooooong time!!!

Edit: Another place is also advertising that they will receive stock of all sizes tomorrow, my preference would be to order here but it's going to be a real test of patience if there is no update here :o

Edit2: I caved, ordered the 120GB for pickup tomorrow/wednesday. Work are paying for it as I need it for my laptop to run demos that use multiple servers in vmware ;) will report back later this week

The Samsung drives are slower (100/80 read/write) although the price you can get them for makes it very appealing to stick 2-4 in a RAID array with a decent controller card

Numbers/specs are not everything. Toms hardware has a good roundup and the Samsung SLC even is on par or beats the intel extreme in some realworld benchmarks and the samsung have longer lifespan. OCZ solid and apex are good for large file transfers but suffer from pausing and bad performance on small files, I preferre a good all rounder thats quick at everything, not just certain things. SLC is better than MLC for this.

This is a thread about the vertex though not apex or solid which is touted to solve the stuttering issues (which can usually be fixed by tweaking the OS anyway).

I'm not arguing with you about the Samsung's looking very good value, just that for people like me after a single drive for a laptop as well as drives to go in my tower I need the quickest single drive possible and the Vertex looks like being it.

Did you ever actually get it?
Just saying, since I know from experience that OCZ are terrible at getting stuff into stock, and updating people on release dates.
I was waiting for my OCZ NIA for months and months after it's was originally scheduled for release, and it was always a "oh, we think we'll have it in next week" situation.
Wish they'd just give a solid date, rather than toying with us, doesn't matter if it's a while away.

Nope, they had the ETA pushed back again :(

I've ordered one of the 64GB Samsung drives that are currently available for a good price and a 120GB Solid drive as I do genuinely need to replace the hard drive in my laptop and can't keep on pushing it back as running 3 servers in vmware on a 2.5" 5400rpm drive is pretty painful for demos!

Am I right in thinking the Vertexes are newer than the Apexes?

Nope vertex are there new performance line (they use a new controller and have a decent cache of 32 or 64mb) We should be seeing performance in the area of the Intel Drives..
...

Um, are the Vertexes the newer drives?

Edit- G Skill and Corsair have joined the race. When are the mechanical hard drive players going to start? The only guys who have anything is Samsung as far as I know.

I see Crucial SLCs of 32 and 64mb will be available on Tuesday @ similar prices to the Solid series.

I think I'll try a sammy.

Ewwww those Crucial SLC drives are slower than regular hard drives, poor show from OcUK as their description says "More reliable, faster, and more durable than traditional magnetic hard drives, Crucial SSDs are a forward-thinking solution for performance users"

Performance users definetely wont want the Crucial SSD's!

The mechanical hard drive players are pretty screwed.
They don't have the right equipment, or employees with the right skillset to make a decent SSD, they'd have to start from scratch.

It'll be the memory companies that do well here.

My guess is they will either start buying out memory companies whilst they still can, or start merging with each other to squeeze out these last few years of magnetic drives. My guess is mechanical drives have 5 years at best before there's no market left for them - SSD's will be bigger, faster, cheaper, and more reliable.

Sorry guys, but i have read about SSD,

I heard there are better but also worse then normal harddrives?

Well from what i gatherd the SSD are good for booting OS, programmes and Games, but are worse for General data?

That's about right, and they aren't necessarily worse for general data, but you won't see any significant improvements so it's a bit of a waste of money when the prices for SSD are still high.

Not too shabby for 2 X25 M's :-)
