Just watching discovery turbo, something about corvette programme called "victory by design". The guy was just talking about a corvette z06 and he compares it to a porsche carrera 911 "v10"... Did porsche ever make a v10 car?

I hate the guy who lives on the next road. He is once again parked outside my flat, which is on a different road to his house. His house has a garage, big drive and space on the road. Yet he parks one of his two cars down here, leaving nowhere for my girlfriend to park.

Why the hell would you rather walk back to your house rather than park outside your own home? Do people really have that much lack of thoughts for others?! So annoyed, but being a road, what the hell can you do without starting a war? :(

Park your car on the road outside his house and take the car that's parked outside yours, it seems he wants to play swapsies but he's obviously a bit too afraid to propose it upfront so you need to make the next move.

Failing that since you appear to know who it is then can't you just ask him in a non-confrontational way why he parks in front of your flat? He might not be aware that he's inconveniencing you but yes, it's perfectly possible he doesn't give that much thought to others.

Their Carrera GT was a mid mounted V10, but a Zee Ohhh Six wouldn't come close  silly Americans :p

well no

Thats BS.

Evo has the book figure for the carrera GT was a 0-60 at 3.8 seconds and the ZO6 at 3.9 seconds

But some of the american magazines managed to record figures lower than that, of more like 3.6 seconds.

You could argue this was biased but at the end of the day the book figures for 0-60 are 0.1 seconds apart. Top speed of the Zo6 is 198mph, the Carrera GT is 205mph

Theres not a lot in it.

A friend has sent me this http://www.allpar.com/eek/hp-vs-torque.html in an arguement that torque makes a car quicker than BHP.

Now I don't fully agree with this. Thoughts?
Essentially it doesn't. If you take two identical cars, but one with peak 140 HP / 300 Nm and the other peak 160 HP / 200 Nm, there's a very good chance the 160 HP car will be faster.

That's actually a pretty decent article and it comes to a good conclusion:
Article said:
Torque and power are (almost) flip sides of the same coin. Increasing the torque of an engine at a particular RPM is the same as increasing the power output at the same RPM.

Power is just as useful and relevant in determining vehicle performance as is torque. In some situations it's more useful, because you may not have to play with gear ratios and a calculator to understand what's going on.
I've bolded the most important bit. Unless you have access to a vehicle's gear ratios and want to do the calculations, the engine power figure pretty much has it all worked out assuming that the manufacturer didn't mate a terrible gearbox to it.

As a comparison example, my car produces about 700 Nm of torque. This is more than a 911 Turbo's 650 Nm. My car produces about 350 HP of power, but this is less than the 911 Turbo's 500 HP. The 911 is a lot, lot faster.

Anyone planning to get a new car soon? Anyone having problems with their car?

I don't know. I'm having my once every couple of months 'I want a new car' thing. Something a little more grown up.

If I could lay my hands on around 3k, what sort of things could I be looking at?

I don't care about age whatsoever. Running costs aren't a massive concern either, I don't mind turning spanners at a weekend some I'd save massively on labor and I don't mind a fixer upper. Fuel is irrelevant because I do silly low mileage and am already used to 10MPG. I'd like 4 doors, but here's the kicker, it NEEDS to be a little bit 'special'. Focuses, Vectras, Mondeos, astras, etc really need not apply. In truth I could really, really do with getting a 'normal' car but I just can't do it :)

I've been through it all before. Around Christmas I was dead set that I'd have an old XJ8 by now, but a mate of mine started looking at XJRs of a similar age and then I started coming to the realization I don't think I'd ever be happy with 'just' a 8. I can imagine that everytime I see a R parked on up the road I'd end up hating my car. Problem is that insurance isn't going to work until I'm at least 21 so I'll have to wait for now.

What I can/can't insure has to be taken on a case by case basis really, but when it comes to old mega barges (A8s, 7 series, etc) I can usually only insure the smallest engine, but I'm willing to loose out on some performance.

Thoughts?

Stick with the Soarer for now. It ticks all the boxes for you at the moment, you will have plenty of chances in the future to change. Don't just buy another car for the sake of it.

Wanting a new car is something that pretty much everyone goes through.

Just tidy up the Soarer if you can do so with minimal expense.

This is the crux of the matter. I'm at the point where I can (and if I keep it probably will) start chucking money on it and never getting it back.

I'm already in too deep. According to the pistonheads cost break down I've chucked about £1500 on bits and pieces on it plus the grand I bought it for and realistically all I can expect back is that a grand if I sell it. Maybe a few quid more if I break it for parts I can't be bothered with the hassle and don't have the heart.

Selling it now would kill two birds with one stone. Get me something a little more sensible/grown up/dignified and remove the temptation of spending a load of money that I'm never going to see back.

I'm just playing with thoughts at the moment anyway :)

I agree. I could never buy any car because every time I saw a Veyron parked on the road I'd just end up hating my car.

Meanwhile back in the real world, realise that the better cars out there don't affect how good your chosen car is or isn't - an XJ8's ability is not affected at all by the existence of the XJR.

I don't hate my car every time I see an M5. If anything, I like it even more.

Today was not a good day. Came off a Kerb which I thought would have been ok, scraped the car underneath, no damage from inspection. Wing mirror got clipped as well, no damage. :\

How much though? Just to keep it running and all OK, I wouldn't say there is any need to keep throwing £1000s more at it.

I'd keep saving until you have more than £3k because as you've said there is nothing interesting for you out there at that price. Keep the car for a couple more years and hopefully you can double (or whatever) your budget in that time.
